Could someone tell me how to add an icon to the taskbar to change resolution in Windows 98 SE?

Are you looking for a one-click solution that re-configures your screen to a new resolution, or do you just want quick access to Display/Properties?

I would be interested in doing this in WinXP, since my kids have games they run @ 256 colors – when they change the setting – it changes it for all users. Perhaps a way to just put a shortcut on the desktop that changes the resolution…. anyone know?

Tried Screensizer – it works as described above – the only annoying thing is that it isn’t easy for my kids to use – they range in age from 3-12; granted, changing screen resolution is a tall order for a three-year old, but if there was an icon on the desktop that I could set… in other words – there would be two icons – one for 1180x whatever, what we usually use on a 21″ monitor, and then another icon for the 800×600 256 colors they need for their games. Of course, if stupid XP would just keep the settings they chose, instead of fripping changing it for everyone….. I paid $200 for this OS, you would think it would do that based on the user’s profile…. hairoutUSA

          Kevin,

In XP, you can right-click on the shortcut to the program, or the EXE itself, and look over on the compaitibility tab. I use this setting in XP to force screen resolutions and color depths for kid’s games….it will do all the work for you. Not to mention it’s also a way to make the program think that it’s running under 98 as well, which some games flat-out DEMAND.

If you can’t find it that way, open up XP’s help and search for Compatibility Wizard. In the results you should see “getting older programs to run under Windows XP.”

The icon I had on the taskbar, you right clicked it and a list of resolutions came on the screen and you left clicked the resolution you wanted and it changed immediately.

        Thanks,
        Carl

From what you say, this sounds like a special icon your video driver added. I do not think there is a native way to do this with W98.
I think the nearest you can get is to right_click on your desktop, select Properties.
Select Settings, then Advanced and select the “Show settings icon on taskbar” option.

I believe there are some third-party add-ons that may give you what you want, and I’m pretty sure someone posted a link to one on the Lounge earlier this year. I’ll keep on searching…

I tried the information you had in Post 96230 and it brought back the icon just like I had.
            Thanks a lot,
