    Greetings one and all.

Here’s a tiny bit of advice For those of you using Microsoft’s “Search the Knowledgebase” on their TechNet website. Check your favorites in case you added it long ago. I thought my browser was losing it when I kept getting an almost instant error using my shortcut to the Knowledgebase. I had to hit the back button everytime it first loaded to get back to the search form.

Turns out, I had not gone to the “Search the Knowledgebase” from the link on Microsoft’s TechNet site. It was totally different than the one I had in my favorites.

I guess I’ll be checking my links a little more closely. I think I added it to my favorites in 98 or 99. Interestingly there was enough of the form there that I was actually searching, but I couldn’t figure out why it was giving me an error about the page not being found.

I still think the Knowledgebase is one of the best places to go for tech support!

As of the date of this post, TechNet is found here http://www.microsoft.com/technet/default.asp

Here’s the URL for TechNet “Search the Knowledgebase”
(I took out the part of the link that talked about frames and the language to use)

      Hi Tom:
Thanks for the tip. Can you tell me what the difference is between the Knowledge Base at
      http://support.microsoft.com/support/search/c.asp?

& the one that you gave at
      http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp?SD=TECH

i.e. Is there an advantage of one over the other?
      Thanks.

        You will find the following:
        http://support.microsoft.com/support/search/c.asp? turns into http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp

They both look the same, however, note the title above the TechNet search. It states “Advanced Search”, and the main difference is in their lists of products. You see games and stuff in the URL listed above, you see more technical stuff in the TechNet link I posted. For example, Cluster Server is in the TechNet list but not in the URL above.

Basically if you go to Microsoft’s home page, then click support to get to http://support.microsoft.com/directory/ you then will find near the bottom, a list of online support under the heading “Find the online support that’s right for you.” When you go to any one of these support sites you will see a link to the searchable Knowledgebase, based on what page you are coming from the list of products is geared towards that type of customer.

How’s that for a short answer?

Searching at MSDN or Technet results in different hits than the usual Support KB.

Especially for the more technical issues.

Support KB is best for “normal” users.
Others are better for the more technical issues.

          Exactly what I meant Howard

Well, thank you both Tom & Howard. I’ve been using the less technical one but I think I’ll try both from now on.
