I was just doing some cleanup work on my wife’s XP computer and found a huge folder of Temp files. They are located in C:Doc & SetCarolLocal settingsApplication DataTemp. Can these be erased? There are lots of *.tmp files which I know can be deleted, but what about the folders? Many of them contain log files from installations. Shouldn’t the installation programs clean up after themselves?
    Thanks, HH

You should be able to delete anything in the temp folder. If a file or folder is needed the software that requires should recreate it.

Yes, installation programs and normal running programs should clean up after themselves but often don’t. Thus the buildup of junk.

You might want to look into the FREE utility CCleaner to do this work for you quickly and safely.

If you wish to delete temporary files ONLY, I recommend Temp File Deleter.
It can be found at http://www.add-ins.com/temp_file_deleter.htm
It’s small and affects only temp files without touching anything else.

Another (free) cleaner is ATF, which I’ve been using for a few years:

      Doesn’t need installing either.

Here’s an even easier way and safe because if the temp files are in use they just won’t delete.

Click Start then Run (Windows key and R) and type %temp% into the open box and click ok. That will bring up all the temp folders in an explorer window for the user. Select all and delete.
If one or more do not delete you’ll have to work around them since they are in use.

Thanks, that was easy. I was left with a half dozen tmp files that were in use. I’ll get them the next time I reboot.
