    Hi there

I enclose a document template where I want to automate the input of fields when opening up this new template. What I mean is that the user will automatically be taken to the first field i.e. the To: field, on return will be taken to the next field i.e Company field, and so on. I have seen this done by using the Fill-In() parameter but I would like to be able to do it without that window appearing. I would also like to ensure that when saving the document the user is presented with the Save As window so that changes cannot be made to the original template.

    Thanks in advance

      Billy:

I have set up your template 2 different ways. The first one is with form text fields with document being protected allowing you to tab through to fill in desired information. The second is more automated that when document is opened, it will prompt you for information which is then filled in wherever referenced. I wasn’t sure where exactly you wanted text to be inserted so if you want the text to show up under the message header label, select gray-shaded box, cut it, and paste it to where you want it. Don’t cut one field and paste to many different spots and each text field is referencing a different thing.

Take a look and see if this is what you are looking for. Detach them both to where your templates are located and use “File, New” to see how they work.

Wonderful. Just what was required. What I now need to know is how this is achieved. Is there a section in any of Woody’s books that refer to these techniques or is ti something that can be picked up by trial and error. I have never used VBA, which is what I assume the input grid was designed by.

        Thanks

I learned this from 1-day training. I’m not sure if it is covered in Woody’s books or not. About the grid, I’m not sure where that came from and as you can see, I couldn’t get it in the 2nd template.

The ‘input grid’ you refer to is called a ‘user form’ and you create it in the VBE (Visual Basic Editor); look up creating these if you like (you should find them in any Word manual that covers programming in VBA as well), but they are fairly advanced stuff and not for the fainthearted!

For UserForms see . For “online forms” follow the links at Word Web Resources – Forms (addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm).

Another alternative to the Fill-In field is the ASK field. You may want to take a look at and UserForm Tutorial.
