Until the September 2012 updates, the GenuineCheck.exe tool worked without fail. Now it shows the above error. I cannot validate any downloads that require validation without this error. My w7 pro windows is legal and is activated. IE 9 is version 9.0.8112.16421 with cipher strength 256-bit. (Even with all security settings set to min., makes no difference) I have downloaded fresh, (same size as the old version), GenuineCheck.exe from the Microsoft site with the same error results…tool no longer supported. I did update my patches from the Update site OK, just could not download the files for any of them. I have search since Sept. 11 for an answer, but have found none. Maybe someone here can set me on the right path…Thank you!

Not sure at what I see, but with IE set to the default browser, this always shows the Mozilla browser, (Firefox v 15.01), as the default browser, which we know does not have activeX. This program, mgadiag.exe, under BROWSER always shows the Mozilla (Firefox) browser as the default browser, even with IE set as the default browser on the computer. Everything on this page is set to disable. I went back to last month to my Full Image Saves with the same error message. My Xp version computer shows this error and also my wife’s computer. The full error when running the GenuineCheck.exe tool (Even a new download of this tool) is: “This version of the windows genuine advantage tool is no longer supported. Please download the newest version and ensure that you have your system clock is accurate.” What would make all of 3 different computers show this same error?

Sounds like you may have the download version and not the active X version of WGA. Try going through windows update (via IE>Tools>Windows Update) and downloading it there.

Let’s just make sure that IE is set as your default browser. Open FireFox first and deselect anything in settings to make FireFox the default browser. Start IE>Tools>Internet Options>Programs Tab> Click “Make Default” and click “Tell me if IE is not my default browser”. Open an application’s About Menu and click on a link to their homepage to see if IE opens as the default browser. If all looks good but your problem still persists, these are the actions I would persue:

1. Have you updated Firefox recently?
2. Try if a system restore will solve your problem.
3. Disable anything with FireFox autostarting in msconfig, services, startup folder, and run folder in registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run).
4. If uncomfortable in the registry then download Autoruns from Windows Systernals (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902) to manage startups
5. Uninstall Firefox which takes few seconds then reinstall with Custom settings when you are selecting the path where Firfox has to be installed, uncheck “Make Firefox as my default browser”.

You are correct in that I have and have been using the downloaded version of Genuinecheck.exe. I have not used the active x version for years. Until this month, genuinecheck.exe worked every time and always gave me the code for the download. 1. Using the current Firefox version 15.01. Uninstalled Firefox…did not help. 2. As stated the last time, I restored my computer using an Image restore. This image restores Everything to the Exact State at the time when backed up. I restored an image dated 08-13-2012. This was a long time before this error started showing up. There was no change it the error I got. 3. When I uninstalled Firefox, I used Revo Pro. Uninstaller, searched the computer and the registry and deleted all found Firefox entries that Revo did not delete. 4. I ran AutoRuns and there in nothing showing Mozilla or Firefox…..(Used AutoRuns since it came out…great program!) 5. Tried the new downloaded Genuinecheck.exe…still showing the full error as shown in my last reply. The size of the old and new files are the same…so probable not changing. Internet Explorer and Firefox is set to detect if they are the current default browser. Re checked IE to be sure it was set as the default browse. Each browser works as the default browser until it is changed by the other browser starting up, asking to be the default browser. I still am searching the internet and have now found many others that have the same trouble. This makes me feel better, but still no answer to this error. I have checked the activation of my w7, and it shows OK, showing it has already been activated. I have set all Internet Explorer security setting to the lowest possible settings, with the same error. Thank you very much for your help. I now am thinking that Microsoft has changed the checking process or there is a problem with genuinecheck.exe file itself. The sizes of the old and new files are the same…so probably have not changed.

I would suggest making sure again that IE is set to as the current default browser then navigate to Windows update through IE>Tools>Windows update and let the active X version install and run. You can also try to uninstall WGA via Control Panel>Uninstall a program>View Installed Updates> Uninstall KB971033 then let windows pick it up a a new Windows update in the instructions above. When active x first came out, Microsoft phoned home with this control installed. Seems like every few hours. Because of this I refused to use the active x control, instead using the genuinecheck.exe tool. This tool bypasses the active x control and gives you a code instead to use. Have you tried the genuinecheck.exe tool? This tool is what I am talking about and still wanting to use. From the error message now from this tool, it seems that the tool needs updated. For a test I let windows install the active x control. It installed and works for the files that need to be validated. This is not what I wanted, I wanted the updated tool so I would not have to use the active x tool. It may be that Microsoft is making us use the active x control instead of the genuine validation tool. Until I know for sure, I would like to have the genuine tool working again. I have restored my computer to my saved Image before I installed the active x tool. Thank you for your input, even tho I still have no answer for my question. I have given you a Thanks for you input. I appreciate it! From your input, at least I now know that my computer is OK.

Thanks for explaining your purpose and what you were trying to achieve. I was under the impression that you were just trying to get past the validation one way or another so you can maintain an updated computer. I have read about the genuinecheck tool but never really used it. I was content in focusing my efforts elsewhere as it was a trade-off I could live with. Wish I could have been more helpful. Lounger, download the genuinecheck.exe and then run it from this site. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/exe-validation.aspx?id=7716 You can see then what I was trying to say in my feeble way. I am sorry about not being very clear….I just thought the error message would let someone with this problem understand what I was after. When this was working, you could validate files WITHOUT active x being used or installed. Today Microsoft still has not fixed it. I think it is Microsoft’s problem now that I see lots of other people having the same trouble. Anyway, if I have to dl files that need to be validated, I will have to install the activex control until genuinecheck.exe is corrected. Thank you again! You made my day even tho we found no working answer for genuinecheck.exe.

IE 9 is version 9.0.8112.16421 with cipher strength 256-bit.

I believe 256-bit is no longer secure and Security Updates have or will invalidate weak encryption.
Perhaps GenuineCheck.exe is also weak and not trusted.

As of 29 August 2013 Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool failed. I had just purchased Win 7 64bit the few days before. I installed it validated it and wanted to install some of the newer apps. “This version of the Windows Genuine Validation Tool is no longer supported. Please download the newest version and ensure that your system clock is accurate”.

OK the above statement says that the tool has expired. RIGHT!!! So called Microsoft three of their techs accused me of Pirating windows. Hold on “the statement above still says the tool is no longer supported” and I can still receive automatic updates on all my systems even XP and MGADiag still says Genuine Windows.

As I have more than one Valid Windows Tried on the others with the same result!!!. Can not download any Windows Software that Require this tool and was downloading the few days before on all systems. Even talked one Microsoft individual into running the tool it gave her the same result I received. this is before she turned me over to the Tech’s who accused me of PIRATING WINDOWS. MICROSOFT needs too screen the personal because I will post the statement until everyone complains that GenuineCheck.exe is out of date. AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

I’m showing the same error trying to validate and download XP MCE 2005 Rollup 2, all the other normal updates are aboard including Windows WGA but the browser keeps insisting it’s out of date, download the the newer version…well I would if I could find it.

Robert, I got the same run around, but did not get anyone at MS Support to say that they had any problem…Just me!
I have also tried it on different computers and other Windows OS versions. The same error on all, not just only on one.
Thank you to everyone. I can val. the needed downloads by using active X. It seems Ms has forced us to go that route…….

Mine only just finally worked directly from WGA but only after yet another install of what I assume must have been an even later version of the one installed via W-U. Validation tool/code generation appears to be defunct.

How did you get it to work? where exactly did you go and do? Windows Update? where in WU? and if the code generator is defunct, then I’m just chasing my tail as I can’t install XP mode without the code.

Any help would be appreciated….sorry to sound frazzled, I have something simple that just turned into a nightmare:)

Me too = my brain is fried because I’ve been struggling with this all afternoon including with the idiots at microsoft “support.”

Could someone kindly explain how to get this to work – do I understand that I have to uninstall firefox and set IE as the default browser than turn on activex somehow (I don;t even know what that is, let alone how to set it), then run the validation tool again and the theory is it should work?

I tried the 2009 tool posted above and it ran happily, but did not provide the code I need to get media player 11 to install.

I think this 2009 version is what finally did the trick for me; I’m not sure because I was link jumping in my search and don’t remember the exact details of where I ended up. I’m not even sure if this is a different version than the one installed by WU, but validation worked post install.

I have Win7, so, no dice…. oh well….do you think Microsoft is just intent on losing it’s core customers? I mean, this is a domino effect; since I can’t install the validation then i can’t install xp mode, and Win XP will no longer be supported next year…..just so they can force whatever windows product down your throat…..the more they paint people into a corner, the faster they’ll run in the other direction. Thanks for the help thought!

If you let the ActiveX tool install and run you should be fine. I’ve never had a problem with that on a machine.

I am trying to download XP Mode, too. Same problem. Here’s the error message I received:

35071-error

I passed the WGA validation diagnostic with flying colors.

Bottom line is Catch-22: You cannot download XP Mode without the current validation tool, but you can’t get the current validation tool from Microsoft.

Happy to report I have a solution. Apparently MS does not want people to use browsers other than IE. I use Firefox as my default. The downloadable validation tool is what returns the “unsupported” message. I set IE as my default browser, went to this page (in IE), linked to the XP Mode download page, and allowed the ActiveX validation control to install. Voila! Validation worked and I was allowed to download the file I wanted.

Microsoft no longer supports the downloadable validation tool. You must use the ActiveX control for validation before you can download.

Switching back to Firefox …

I came across this resource via a google search on the XP compatibility mode / Win 7 download problem, which I also was having. This method worked for me as well.

Nice of them to let a customer know – and evidently not even their own support staff … instead just let us thrash around, get irritated, and by chance find a forum such as this where people are grappling with finding workarounds. All I wanted to do is install an old (but important) program in Win 7 — a supposedly simple download process. 6 hours later, I hope I finally can. Sheez!

And yes, now back to Firefox ….
