    Subject: browser problem
Interesting problem: New Win 7 64bit Home build PC cannot connect to a particular web site (ripoffreport.com) –it just times out. On this computer all 3 major browsers (IE 8, FF 4 and Chrome) will not connect to this site. Otherwise all 3 browsers appear to work fine. Other PC’s and Macs on the same network connect to ripoffreport.com without problem using any of the browsers.

I have turned off firewall and antivirus, changed DNS settings, tried dynamic and fixed IP’s, updated Flash and Java, updated windows, Entering through search engines, deleting cookies, checked the hosts file and other stuff.

    Any ideas?

      Hi deltasierra,

Try running an elevated command by typing ‘cmd’ in start menu search box, right click, and run as administrator then type ipconfig /flushdns hit enter type exit hit enter to close.

flush was successful, but that page WILL NOT LOAD (IE, FF, Chrome)!!!

Try restarting FF with Add ons Disabled.

I use a ‘package’ of internet protection software. At least two of the programs, add bad (suspect) web addresses to the HOSTS file, to prevent the browsers from ever going there. I have used hosts manager to keep my HOSTS file updated. Many times, to get to a certain web site, I have to open hosts manager and disable the hosts file in order for my Firefox browser to go to that particular web site.
It’s kind of a pain, but it goes a long ways toward keeping me safe, while on the internet.

You can manually disable your own HOSTS file, by just temporarily renaming it.

          Good Luck,
          The Doctor 😎

OH, by the way, my own level of security prevents me from getting to that web site.
There must be something suspect or just plain dangerous, on that site. Good Luck!

PS: I did Google ‘ripoffreports’ and found this site that talks about it.

What happens if you logon to Windows as a different user?

In router settings – are there any Access Restrictions by IP address or MAC address?

        just tried adding
        217.17.158.54 ripoffreport.com
        to hosts file. no luck

So could it be that somehow the page is authored in a way that is conflicting with something on this pc? It happens across browsers and user accounts.

If you add it to your host file it probably won’t load as the Hosts file will only direct any requests back to itself.

Do you have a recent image backup? If yes, have you tried it? If not, consider making a system image backup. There is quite a bit of info at this Forum….

      • #1284607

tried it. flushed dns cache and still not working. i have been using opendns servers and verified that those servers were NOT active. All the other computers are using the same dns anyway.

Do not have an image. This is a newly built pc which I should have imaged. In any case this is not a big practical deal as I can reach the site from nearby computers but the fact that just this pc cannot reach them using any of the new browsers is vexing. I can however reach the sites that were mentioned in the SOLVED forum

I have flushed the DNS and deleted cache, and checked the HOSTS file and everything seems in order. Have done full virus and spyware scans with nothing to report and my HijackThis log is clean too

tried both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions (IE8). No change.

BTW-In this version IE8 the button says “restore advanced settings”

Also added Opera 11.11 to the list of browsers that are not connecting.

          ……

Is there also a section that says “Reset Internet Explorer settings” along with a “Reset” button?

Try the Reset and restart IE8.

        • #1284827

          Try these:
          1) Ping the web site: open Windows CMD; beside the “C:” (you may have to enter some “cd..” to get to that prompt), type “ping http://www.bbc.co.uk” and press enter; you will see a message “Pinging http://www.bbc.co.uk [xx.xxx.xxx.x] with 32 bytes of data:”; then you should see 4 lines “Reply from xx.xxx.xxx.x: bytes=32 time=xxms TTL=60”; and then 2 summary lines; if you get a “timed out” then the problem is at the web site; if you get “unable to find web site”, then do the following
          2) check you antivirus; some will prohibit access for some reason – typically a threat of some sort;
          3) check your ISP as they may be blocking the site

BTW: you can ping any web site, router or computer on you network.

          @deltasierra

I’m amazed at all the things you’ve tried so far – don’t know if I’d even have thought of half of them.
What DNS servers are you using?

I ask because over the years I’ve had occasional problems with the defaults provided by dial-up, aDSL, and cable. I don’t recall ever having a problem using OpenDNS: 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220 or Google’s (you’ll have to …er, Google for their addresses.

I just checked the link you gave and had no problem. Running FF 5 on Ubuntu 11.04 x64, over dumb cable modem, with OpenDNS set in network config.

Hope this might give you something else to try. Given all that you’ve tried, I’m at a loss as to what the problem might be. Truly hope you get this fixed. I’ve been running Win from ’98 through 7 x64 and other OSes and I know how frustrating it is when one can’t even find the exact problem. (Oh – in earlier Windows, dunno about now, sometimes had to use Spybot Search and Destroy’s tool to fix winsock….)

        • #1285219

I’ve encountered this type of problem myself. It’s possible your router’s DNS cache is corrupted.
To flush it & force it to get new addresses from the Network, reboot the router (power off for 30 seconds), then try again.

          • #1285874

Tried Rizone, Tried resetting fios adapter and router-Still the oly way to get through is another computer (which is on the same switch and ISP) or using anonymizer.

So Why would a VPN allow this pc to connect?

    • #1284738

Had a very similar problem and after much hunting I found Rizone Internet repair. Fixed my problem and after almost a year now it has fixed more than a dozen computers that has experienced Net Work connection problems.

Follow link http://www.rizone3.com/downloads-more/?did=8 and download Rizone complete internet repair. Run it and it will reset the stack and fix most problems. I would tick all options for fix in box of options.

It is a one click fix and is also USB portable. Will fix 99% of problems including DNS/IP stack/winsock/VPN/dhcp errors/connectivity and internet explorer etc.

    • #1284831

BTW: Since it appears it is only on this one computer, have you installed, updated and run Malwarebytes Antimalware?

What antivirus do you have on the computer and is it still working and updated?

    • #1284859

Not that this is any help, but I cannot get to http://www.ripoffreport.com either. I can get to http://www.bbc.co.uk/ just fine.

      I tried both firefox 3.6 and ie8

    • #1285009

Thanks for all the suggestions – I will try it all out this weekend. “Glad” to hear that dalejanus[/url] has same problem …thought I was going nuts.

To answer some of the questions asked I am using MS Security Essentials and pblm still occurs even when it is turned off (daily scans run no threats ever found). I am using Opendns 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 have also tried the open google servers 8.8.8.8 et al.

Not yet run [/B]Malwarebytes Antimalware, (this is a new build (abt 3 wks)) Running Win 7 Pro 64 bit. My old PC (XP SP3) currently on the same switch is not affected. I am not running parental controls (that I know of) and can get to some non parental approved sites (only as a test :))

Ping of BBC is no packet loss. Ping of ripoffreport.com times out. Suggesting the problem, is at the web site???

      Interesting development…

I installed anonymizer and was actually able to get to ripoffreport.com

After disconnecting from anonymizer the site could not be reached.

Usually, that would be a pretty clear indication that your ISP is blocking the site. But presumably the other machines on the network are using the same ISP, so ??? I know zero about setting up a network–is it possible to set one up with different machines on the network using different ISPs?

    • #1285935

Have you tried a ping or a tracert to the web domain?

    • #1285936

ping request times out 100% packet loss. tracert gets to step 9 then times out

    • #1285937

If you do that from the other computers, are the results similar?

    • #1285941

I was thinking this might be a network issue and not anything related to browsing, but a few tracerts of mine didn’t work either, so I think that conclusion may not be made this way.

I am aware that this is an old thread. Perhaps someone with a new outlook may find a solution. I have been unable to load ” https://customer.jvzoo.com/portal/index.php” for three months. It was all right before. If I tried to connect i got a blank page, no source. if i tried to make a purchase from another website, I got an error dialog (maybe a server error 500. So I had to make purchases via ipod or another computer.

This happened with Chrome, IE9 and Safari.

I tried all the remedies, including connecting straight to the modem, and two different modems. Nothing worked. Then one day I experienced the BSOD and nothing would help except to “return to a previous configuration that worked”. After that I could load the site. But 24 hours later the problem resumed and I could not load again.

Hopefully, this will give someone in the future an insight to a permanent solution.

      • #1374352

Yes, and filling the inputs and clicking “login” takes me to “https://customer.jvzoo.com/portal/index”, a blank page, whether I input contact email and password manually or with Roboform. Roboform will get me to the …/portal page but not the …/purchases page.

If I do the same on another computer, I get “https://customer.jvzoo.com/portal/purchases” which is my “My Purchases” page. I also used another computer to change password and contact and the result is still the same. In addition, I have renamed the folders of antivirus, spybot and such and deactivated firewall. allowed all cookies, and third party whatever all at the same time.

    • #1374378

Your original link led me to a blank page as well, so it’s definitely not a problem with your computer or browsers. You better contact support for that site.

    • #1382923

Hi, I am having the same problem. I was getting a Rundll error message upon startup and certian common webpages would not load or very slow. As well when I googled something and clicked on the webpage I wanted it redirected me to somewhere else. I uploaded Malware Bytes and it detected and deleted three issues but the problem remains and is getting worse. I also ran CCleaner and Spybot to no avail. Since running Malware the Rundll error message has gone upon start-up.

Also, when I tried resetting internet options it kept telling me something was running and would not allow me to reset.

      Any thoughts?

Also, please note that I am not a “computer guy” so plain english is best when replying.

Much thanks for any help you can give me.

    • #1382989

This problem has been ongoing for some time (many months). I have seen it myself, and I have seen lots of postings about it. The problem is that certain websites won’t load when you try to go to them. And malware scans report nothing.

My guess is that there’s some new, as-of-yet undetectable malware out there which is causing this.

In my case, a friend of mine couldn’t get to mapquest, yahoo maps, or other map web sites, as well as a few other sites. He had only IE installed. I tried to get to mozilla.org in order to download Firefox, but you guessed it, I couldn’t. I went home and downloaded Firefox from my computer to CD. I then installed Firefox on his computer from the CD, and he could then surf to all desired websites with Firefox.

Since he had nothing he needed to save on his computer, I did a factory restore, wiping the drive in the process. I made sure he had anti-malware software installed. He then could get to all desired websites using IE.
