When using Thunderbird (all versions since 2.x), I am unable to get a filter to forward an email.

I want to forward a copy of certain incoming emails to my wife’s account. The filter will work to move the message to another folder, or any other rule. However, the rule to forward the email always gets the error message from Thunderbird, “Sending of message failed.” with no other help. So, it appears to execute the rule, but the actual sending of the forward does not work. In addition, the message just disappears, it is not in the Outbox.

Google search shows tips that the rule must be on a mail account, and not on local folders. I have done that.

This is one supreme aggravation and has been around for a long time on many versions. I can’t believe there is no workaround or fix.

Hopefully, the Lounge will come up with the answer! Thanks!

      Hi Don,

I’ve not got the answer you are looking for I’m afraid but have just tried to set this up myself on my Thunderbird client (v3.0.5) and it worked first time.

The rule I used if is email is from x@y.com then forward email to a@b.com. The rule was set up on my POP3 account and my client is only set up to use 1 outgoing SMTP server.

So Thunderbird can do it…… but I don’t know if your setup is any different to mine or your email server is bouncing the send request and whether this is causing the problem.

Perhaps something to try if your wife uses Thunderbird and her email is with a different ISP or you have an email account with a different ISP try a test on that and see if you can get it working.

I use the same rule to forward emails after moving to another folder, but I only receive the error message you describe the very first time the rule is run, thereafter it works fine. Have you checked to see if your rule works after the first time?

I use TBird 3.1, both installed and the portable version, but this is the same rule and results used in the 2.x versions.
