What causes the creation of these, and can I delete all but the one “Default User”?

It appears from researching, that the “extra” folders can be safely deleted.  We shall see!

Those folders are usually created when there is an issue with your user profile, possibly during an upgrade or patch. As they are “default” user profiles you can safely delete the numbered ones – after a backup, of course.
