Too Many Java Updates Installed.

Revo Uninstaller Pro has Java 6 Update 26 and Java 6 Update 23 as installed.

Control Panel has Java 6 Update 30 and Java 7 Update 2 (64-bit) as installed.

I think I have two many updates installed.

Which of the above are correct and which should be uninstalled?

All help will be appreciated.

As far as I can tell, version 6 Update 30 is the latest released version for both 32 Bit and 64 Bit. I would uninstall ALL installed versions then use the link I supplied to install the latest 32 Bit and 64 Bit versions again. Uninstalling the old will ensure they do not interfere with each other.

Ted, I ran JavaRa 1.16 and it removed everything but Java6 Update 30 & Java 7 Update 2 (64-bit), including what it found in the registry. The Control Panel and Revo both now show the same versions.

Should I remove Java 7, or both versions and start all over installing Java by using the links you provided? My program that runs on Java isn’t complaining about the versions I have.

I agree with Ted here in that you should remove all versions of Java.

First of all, use your browsers add-in menu to remove all references to Java. Secondly, use the control panel to again remove all references to Java. At this point you may want to run Revo to ensure it has gone!

Now restart your PC and follow Ted’s link and it will install the latest version that is appropriate for your system.

Thanks, Infinicore for the suggestion, it reminded me that I already had JavaRa installed. I ran it and I couldn’t believe all the Java stuff in found in the registry most were CLSID’s.

The Java app in your control panel, can give you information about what version is currently on your PC.
I currently have Java 7.1 installed.

I just used the Java app in my Control Panel, to download and install the latest update, Java 7.2.
In ‘Add-Remove Programs’ I only see the latest version.
Java can also be a great morning eye opener! :rolleyes:

If you subscribe to “File Hippo” you will always stay up to date on all your programs, like Java, Flash, Shoclwave, K-Lite Codecs, your AV and AS software, Firefox, Thunderbird, etc. I find it extremely helpful to keep everything up to date.

How does one install Java from Add Remove Programs?

I subscribe to File Hippo but I wasn’t sure if I should use it to install Java Updates. Thanks for the heads up, I will use it the next time it appears.

Very strange. If you go directly to Java.com, this is the version you will see:

29704-Java7.22

29705-Java7.23

When I check my system I indeed have version 7.2 installed:

29706-Java7.2

I do not remember installing v7.2 intentionally, but who knows. Seems to be working well.

Oracle does indeed recommend uninstalling earlier versions of Java.

I was advised to install both even if you don’t use one or the other.

You’ll be notified if you run a 64-bit program that requires 64-bit Java. Until that happens you don’t really need to install it.

There actually IS a 64 bit version of Java. I have it, on my Utilities CD, but I don’t use it here (XP, 32 bit).
Google for it.

I don’t remember ever saying I installed Java from ‘Add/Remove’ programs.
I used that only to tell me what was already installed….. till I found the Java app. in the control panel.

Just use the Java app, to check for and download updates. That’s why it’s there!

Whenever you do anything with Java, like install an update, you will find the Java-Scheduler in your Startup folder. UN-Check it, so it doesn’t run in the background all the time.
While you’re there, uncheck all other reminders, schedulers, etc., to speed up your PC.
You can easily find that folder when you RUN Msconfig.
