For last months, perhaps after installing Firefox, I have noticed that several Tool/Options choices do not stick.

The ones I am aware of are, under Edit – Use Ins key
Under Save – Always create backup & Prompt to save Normal

The Firefox Add-ons I have are NoScript; PlainoldFavorites; No Squint, Addblock Plus.

The only other new program I have been using is WMP10.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    Thank you.

I don’t think Firefox and its add-ons or WMP10 affect Microsoft Word settings in any way.

Some add-ins are badly programmed, they can wreak havoc with customizations, so I’d suspect a Word add-in (and if you use Word as e-mail editor in Outlook, possibly an Outlook add-in) to be the culprit. One of the steps in Phil Rabichow’s troubleshooting guide is to disable add-ins to see if the problem goes away.

Thank you, Hans, for your suggestions.

The only Add-In that was checked was Microsoft Word East European Fonts Tool & it wasn’t “currently loaded.”

I have/had del all temp files.

Since this behavior is intermittent, (days can go by before choices become unstuck) I’m not sure what, if anything, I’d learn from performing winword.exe /a.

If I have to del the Data Key, I read that I should also del Normal.Dot (this was in the Word 97 days….). Still true?

Before going this route, am wondering if I have other choices? System Restore wasn’t mentioned….

            Thanks for your input,

Starting Word with the /a option will most probably not help in your situation.

The Normal template and the Data key in the registry are independent from each other, there is no need to delete the Normal template if you delete the Data key in the registry.
I’d delete the Data key and see if the problem stays away.

I doubt that a system restore would help with this problem, I wouldn’t recommend it at this stage.

Thank you – and for clearing up the Normal.Dot./Data Key question.

(Re backing up Options (didn’t know whether to create a new thread….)

The MVP article “What exactly does the Data Key in the Registry store?” by Beth Melton suggests that to preserve your Settings preferences you create a macro and select each tab in the dialog box before clicking OK.

Phil’s advice is to change an option on each tab, record a macro, then go to each of the tabs & change it back the way you want.

The option from the MVP article seems much quicker in that you merely select each tab, no changes involved. Am I reading this correctly and will it accomplish the same mission as Phil’s?

              Thank you.

As far as I can tell, activating a tab in the Options dialog is enough to make Word include all options from that tab in the recorded macro, so Beth Melton’s suggestion is sufficient.
