      Woody:

In your recent article “Top 25 free apps for Windows 10”, you mentioned Dropbox.

A few years ago I installed Dropbox on a friend’s computer – she was in a study group, and they used Dropbox to share files among the group members.

I had her set up with a standard, not Administrator, Windows account for her day to day work.

The first red flag which popped up was, it wanted administrator rights to the PC to be able to do the install. I wondered why it would need administrator rights to the computer just to be able to share the contents of a folder on the computer. I thought, if there is a rogue member of the group, he could easily own her PC.

The second red flag was that I noticed that all of the pictures on the computer were being shared with the group, not just the folder pertaining to the study group. During the install, it never asked me which folders I wanted to share, it just automatically assumed I wanted to share all photos. I changed the settings to give it access only to the needed folder.

I’m not interested in Dropbox – it is way too intrusive when it doesn’t need to be.

I see why you’re concerned. But there’s an easier way.

When you install Dropbox, it needs Admin privileges for lots of things, the primary one is installing the software that makes Dropbox work like any other folder on your computer. So you install it with an Admin account, then use it with any account.

Once you’ve set up Dropbox on a computer, you should create a folder for the study group, then right-click on the folder and share the folder. Just that folder, nothing else.

      Woddy,

I tried to use Ninite to get a couple of the 25 free apps for Win 10. I started Ninite on the Win 10 machine & didn’t see the Utilities list of programs. It was on the list from my Win 7 laptop, but no section of Utilities. I’d like to try the REVO uninstaller on the Win 10 machine, but can’t seem to get it from Ninite.

      Thanks,

      Great articles as usual.

Hmmmm… Did you use one of the usual browsers and just go to their site?

That’s the easy way. You should see something very similar to the screenshots in the article.
