    Total Commander – home

    http://www.ghisler.com/index.htm

Total Commander is a tremendous File Manager, building on Explorer hooks and going well beyond without letting Explorer or Windows Search hold it back, I have paid a one time Lifetime payment for mine but I run it for Free for Years before I did. It has been around under one name or another since the 90’s with the original founder, Christian Ghisler in Switzerland. The Search, compare and rename facilities are phenomenal and Fast.

He also has a companion App for Android in Google Play. It is awesome for my NAS’s and other Network File work from my Phone and Tablet. It is totally free. It has several Plugins for it, that one will need, and a couple created by Paragon who make my Hard Disk Manager Suite(Backups etc) Software. be very careful about fraudulent Apps in Google Play, Familiarize yourself with his ICON.

Features in Total Commander 9.0a now include :

Two file windows side by side
    Multiple language and Unicode support
    Enhanced search function
Compare files (now with editor) / synchronize directories
Quick View panel with bitmap display
ZIP, 7ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE archive handling + plugins
Built-in FTP client with FXP (server to server) and HTTP proxy support
    Parallel port link, multi-rename tool
Tabbed interface, regular expressions, history+favorites buttons
Thumbnails view, custom columns, enhanced search
Compare editor, cursor in lister, separate trees, logging, enhanced overwrite dialog etc.
Unicode names almost everywhere, long names (>259 characters), password manager for ftp and plugins, synchronize empty dirs, 64 bit context menu, quick file filter (Ctrl+S)
USB port connection via special direct transfer cable, partial branch view (Ctrl+Shift+B), and many improvements to ftp, synchronizing and other functions
    And many more!

Just being at this topic, does anyone here understand the difference between a folder and a directory? 🙂

Here is what the User Profiles super expert Helge Klein has to say about this:
      https://helgeklein.com/blog/2014/10/folder-redirection-impacts-ux-breaks-applications/
There is a – subtle – difference between a folder and a directory: the former is a virtual container in the namespace of the shell. The latter is a container in the file system.

I read for the first time about Total Commander in one of Helge’s articles and I remembered him writing that Windows (File) Explorer shows only folders, while the command prompt and Total Commander show the true directories, those hidden from view by Explorer.
While in most situations the two, folders and directories are identical, think about Temporary Internet Files or Internet Explorer History as folders visible in Windows (File) Explorer, while the true file system structure on disk, the real files and directories, are visible only while using command prompt, more useful if Run as Administrator.

Have used ZTree since the end of XTree.
Its a text based win32 program, just great for source file managment over smb shares to linux servers.
Not free but low cost, give it a try!

Great mini Tutorial 😀 I learned something new….

Then one can add Gmails “Labels” which are different again for Email but very useful.
