Toucan can run from a cloud folder, external drive, or local folder without installing into Windows

Toucan is a small utility allowing you to synchronise, backup and secure your data…

Five synchronisation modes, Copy, Mirror, Equalise, Move and Clean. These can be combined with a variety of file checks such as File Size, Modified Time and a File Header Check to minimise the amount of copying needed.

Backup and restore in industry standard Zip, 7-Zip and GZip files, with support for complete backups, updating existing backups and differential backups, as well as restoring files from an archive. Automatic testing of created archives is also supported as is password protection.

    AES-256 encryption using ccrypt.

A complete command line system allowing you to create new jobs and run existing ones from the command prompt or a batch file.

A Rules system that allows you to easily exclude files based on their name, a regular expression, their modified date or file size.

An advanced scripting system using the Lua programming language that allows complex scripts to be created, anything from a backup script that automatically uploads new backups to a script that synchronizes your files to a USB drive and then encrypts the sensitive files in case of loss.

A large collect of in built Variables for basic functions such as the date and time or more complex variables that point to the drives label or documents directory. You can also define your own as short cuts to paths on your USB drive or your PC.

Some software/utilities don’t need new (useless) features (Windows 10 ?). They just need security and bugs fixes.
if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

When software becomes “frozen” by the death of its author (eg Kan Yabumoto for XXCOPY) you are stuck with the software as it is.ย  A few of Karen Kenworthy’s Power Tools are still being maintained, by a keen programmer.

I would be very reluctant to trust such a function so important as backup to a utility that hadn’t been substantially worked on in seven years (according to Paul T)!ย  Your kilometreage may vary…

Interesting that the product is from PortableApps, not a packaged product from someone else.

Alex, do you use this app? How is it better than any of the other file copy apps, apart from being portable? (You really should do a review of these – you can compete with Deanna from OlderGeeks for the geekiest software review)

      cheers, Paul

This is a backup (full, differential, mirror, restore..and more, app, not a file copy, with compression, password..

I myself use Acronis (2019) but some may want a simpler tool than Macrium…

        • #2425975

How do you know it’s simpler if you’ve not tested it?

          cheers, Paul

how do you know alex hasn’t tested macrium and opted for acronis? ๐Ÿ™‚

Windows - commercial by definition and now function...

I have two 4TB drives which I use for mass storage. One drive is backup for the other and I backup once a month. I’ve been using Toucan for literally more years than I can remember and I love it.

As far as I know it can’t be used to backup your system drive, nor do I use it for that purpose.

P.S. I don’t work for Toucan or the outfit that publishes it not do I have any connection with its commercial operations at all. I only use it to backup my data drive.

      Highly recommended. ๐Ÿ‘

What use is it if it won’t do both system and data?
What do you use for a system backup?

        cheers, Paul
