Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

InactiveDecember 28, 2014 at 8:33 pm #52072Woody, now that you have had a chance to look over what Windows 10 probably will be, what is your overall impression? Is Win 10 likely to be a significant improvement over #%$#@$#*& (a.k.a. Win 8)for those of us who still earn a living at a keyboard/desktop computer and find those little touch and go tablets a step backward?
As always, thanks and best wishes for the new year.

GuestJanuary 5, 2015 at 11:38 pm #52076Hi Woody,
Any updates on patches? Rebuilding my system as my HDD crashed right before the college semester began. Trying to get it running before I get too far behind.
In Windows update on a clean install w/SP1 64-BIT 1, should we go ahead and install all of the IE 8 Security updates First OR Just Go Ahead And Install IE11. Both are offered. Go figure.
Any other advice on a clean install? (We only get 2 activations as it’s an academic version (even though it’s the same hardware).
Thanks and Happy New Year!

If you’re rebuilding a system from scratch, apply all of the patches right away. Go through Windows Update 3 or 4 or 5 times, to make sure you got all of them.
I wouldn’t bother with IE 8 patches. Install IE 11 and be done with it. (IE 10 is probably better, but you likely don’t have it offered.) Usual admonition applies: Keep IE up to date, but use Chrome and/or Firefox.
Clean installs are definitely the way to go, if you can afford the time. And the pain…
