Anybody know how to trrace a link in a spreadsheet?( I am trying to find the linked cell/s). I have tried to switch to formula auditing mode and try to find it that way but no luck. And I just don’t want to brake the link as it will hardcode my formula, which is not what I want to do. Thank you.

Do you want to find a link to an external workbook? If so, you can search for the text .xls] across all sheets, matching part of the cell and looking within formulas, for an external link is of the form

      ='[workbookname.xls]sheetname'!cellreference

so it should always contain .xls].

For the benfit of others who have encountered annoying ‘workbook links’:
The presence of ‘links’ in a workbook can be seen when you select Edit->Links from the top-panel Excel command bar.
(If the Links option is greyed out – you don’t have any!)

Hans describes your first line of attack – use Ctrl-F (Find) to search each of your sheets for .xls]

If a sheet has been copied from another workbook into the current workbook, it will typically also ‘import’ range names that were set in the other workbook.
You should therefore also check any assigned range names : use Insert->Name->Define and check the Refers to: for each entry.

Also, if you have any objects, images etc that have been copied from another workbook (they may have ad macros assigned to them inthe other workbook) -right-click the object and check assigned macros -delete or update as necessary.

In many cases, I have been able to get rid of ‘links’ by using Edit->Links and then changing the indicated source file(s) to the ‘current’ file
(You have to browse and point to the current file)

        Hope this helps
