When a record is created locally, I’d like to be able to add the record to an existing table residing on the Web. So far I’ve had no joy linking to a web backend. At this point we’d be more than willing to entertain pushing a copy of relevant tables to the webserver via FTP on a scheduled basis but haven’t been able to find a way to do that through automation. I’ve searched the archive and all I can really find are discussions of specific problems but not the basics. Can anyone point me in the right direction bearing in mind at this point I’m totally clueless. brickwall

I’m sorry, Brian, but what is it you’re trying to automate, writing a record to a table on the web, pushing a copy of tables to a web server, or something else? As far as I can tell, you’re talking about using an AXP back end to a web application, but what is the “local” part?

Thanks for your interest Charlotte. I have a LAN consisting of Access XP Front Ends on workstations connected to a Win2000 server hosting the Access Back End.
We want to enable Web Users to access specific records created on the LAN. We have created a database on a remote Web Server to hold these records and they are accessed through ASP script. So far, the only way we have been able to update the Web Server is by pushing the tables via FTP using brute force.
Although writing a record to the Web Server at time of local creation/modification is attractive since it keeps the Server current, I can see how it could be cumbersome ensuring the data is truly matched in both databases. A certain delay in updating the Web Server is not a terrible problem so right now we’re looking for a way to schedule an update or make table query and automatically push the table to the Web Server replacing the existing table.
Probelm is, I don’t have a clue how to establish a connection from AccXP to the Web Server either to export the table or update the Web Server table.

          Hi Brian,

It sounds like your Web Server is remote – is this correct? If so, you’re correct – automating FTP is about the best way to run things under the circumstances. (By the way, to automate the process you could write a simple DOS FTP command, then assign it to run at a desired time in the Windows Task Scheduler…)

One other possible solution would be to use Database Replication to keep things synchronized between web server and local users. I haven’t used this before, but I understand that it exists just for situations like this.

          Hope this helps

Cheers Mark cheers Took your advise and shell to an ftp .txt batch file which I can fire from a button or timer event. Works just fine. Thanks again.
