For some reason Windows Defender D/L seems to be holding up all of todays updates on my bld. 1511. 0% for the last 2 1/2 hrs. I tried restart so that maybe it would look again, but no difference.
    Anyone else encountering this??

Not having that problem but when I tried to use Disk Cleanup after the upgrade it reported that I had 3 TB it could free (????) of Windows Update files. I rebooted, tried Disk Cleanup again and then got a BSOD (KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE).

Windows 10 is out of control.

It’s just now rebooting after about 5 hrs. +, well over 4 hrs. to just D/L Windows Defender, Flash Player, Mal. Sftware. Removal tool, and Cum. update for 1511 KB3198586 !!
Normally it takes 30 mins. to maximum of 1 hr. for the whole process.
Starting to remind me of the W7 debacle.

No problem here. I installed all the smaller patches first and then the cumulative update. It completed in less than 10 minutes (SSD) and as an encore delivered another Defender definition update. Disk Clean Up found 1.6GB of update files to be removed.

Glad to see you had no problems, must have been some kind of glitch here. I checked Internet speed by using my W7 computer and no slow down there. Another MS mystery I guess.

Good article here from Neowin which details the fixes included in the various cumulative updates.

I initially got an update for Windows Defender stuck on Download 0% even though I use Norton Security.

I think the reason for that is that Norton hasn’t been starting as quickly as it should, so WD was being initially activated.

I tried disabling Norton to see if the update would then download, but all I got was that WD was trying to run a Limited Scan as I already had a 3rd party AV.

I have the option of its Limited Scan turned off.

I eventually got the rest of the updates and the WD one was no longer listed.

Their download seemed to pull my wired speed down and the download was slower going and eventually seemed to be stuck on 95%.

I changed the display off time to 3 mins and went to bed as it was quite late by then.

This morning when I wiped my finger over the Touchpad it still showed as 95% but quickly went to a prompt to install, so I had to wait for that and then the prompt to restart.

First time I’ve had any problems with updates since upgrading to 10.

I haven’t run Disk Cleanup but may give the dism /startcomponentcleanup a run which also cleans up the WinSxS folder.

No problems EXCEPT: “Preparing to install updates” ran for nearly 15 minutes before my desktop re-booted.

: I have also had the spurious 3TB declared “free-upable” by disk cleanup on several occasions since installation of the AU.

      @Sudo15,

Microsoft changed how WD works with a prior version of Windows. During the boot process, when you have a third party A/V product installed there is a brief time period that the network may be vulnerable before the third party product is started. During that time a small part of WD is run to protect the network until the third party product can take over. A properly written third party product will notify Windows it is ready and Windows will shut down the WD pieces.

I don’t have any third party AV and WD took hours before downloading and then letting the other updates start. Maybe it’s because of the interaction with Bld. 1511??? If so, WU day is going to be a pain.
Once the WD update finally downloaded, flash player and MSRT downloaded fairly fast but then took forever on the Cum. Update.

Thanks Joe – I thought there was something wrong with my Norton Security.

In its AV settings is a Boot Time Protection which is default to Off with options of Normal and Aggressive, so I have set it to Normal to see if it starts a bit quicker.

I had been getting alerts about antivirus and network firewall which when clicked on would take me to the Action Center where when using the dropdown, would initially not show Norton and then it would show it as being on.

I don’t think I’ve had those alerts since setting it to Normal.
