The TweakGuides Tweaking Companion for Windows is finally available. It covers all of the features of Windows 8, including how to safely optimize and customize most of them. The book is equally handy for new users of Windows 8, as well as those considering upgrading to it. As before, it is available in a free Regular Edition and the paid Deluxe Edition. These guides Have got to be the most comprehensive I have found. I have purchased the Deluxe version for myself. Take a look!

      Ted,

On your advice I emptied my piggy bank and bought the Deluxe version. 😆
I’ve perused the first couple of chapters. The chapter on New things in Win 8 was great and at 600+ pages well worth the money.

      Thanks again!

May the Forces of good computing be with you!

Thank you gentlemen. I have just begun looking through some of the info. It really is packed with said info. The nice thing is no matter whether you use XP, Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, there is an edition specifically for you.

How sad? I’ve never made an ‘online’ purchase before but was going to buy the Deluxe version only to find that I have to create a PayPal account which would most likely never get used again.

You can pay with a credit or debit card without creating a PayPal account (if you read the complete screen).

          Ted, and all,
I discovered this very same site also features a really nifty writeup on downloading/installing/configuering/tweaking of nVidia graphics drivers. Great stuff for folks like me anyway who still have a lot to learn. I imagine the article is already incorporated into the guides, but I just wanted to share this part because I’ve already gotten so much light out of it. Here is the link to the nVidia guide:

I’d be wary of the advice given in that article if you are using an OEM machine as quite often, Nvidia drivers are OEM modified and downloading from the manufacturer’s site instead of the computer vendor’s support site usually results with a BSOD.

^^ That in Spades for a notebook with switchable dual graphics options; some OEMs warn specifically against it and recent Intel installers should be programmed to fail on detection of OEM Windows+dual graphics. Retail, possibly also Small Builder OEM, Windows installs on OEM hardware can use Intel drivers.

I also bought the Deluxe ver. 🙂

I have often said that drivers, especially graphics drivers should probably be left alone unless there is a specific problem that a user is attempting to fix. The user should then check the PC manufacturer’s site first, and lastly go to the graphics manufacturer’s site. Many of the manufacturer’s drivers are still awaiting certification by MS and the OEM partners and might have unwanted effects on your PC. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” comes to mind!

Even though video drivers for all my graphic cards MFG sites have never been an issue —–“” Hey “, it happens.

I’ve found that the embedded (on board) video drivers seem to be more at risk, but that’s just my HO.
