I added two accounts to my Outlook setup. Both email accounts are outlook.com addresses, but one installed itself as a Microsoft Exchange account and the other as an “Exchange ActiveSync” account. Why the difference? (I’m using Outlook 2016 as part of an Office365 installation.)

Is the one identified as Microsoft Exchange through Office 365 and the other through Outlook.com?

The address that is attached to my Office 365 account is the one that is installed as “Exchange ActiveSync.” I added that account to Outlook first. Then, when I added the second address, I was surprised to see that it installed itself as a Microsoft Exchange account. I first noticed this because, on the Home Page tab of the Data File Properties window for my first (default) account, “Show home page folder by default” is grayed out. The second account, the one installed as Microsoft Exchange,” has grabbed that right and won’t let me use it for my default account.

The Office 365 accounts I’ve seen are identified as Microsoft Exchange. Accounts originally created in Hotmail.com, msn.com, live.com, & Outlook.com are “Exchange ActiveSync”.

In response to Joe, the two accounts are both Outlook.com. The Office 365 account is the one I installed first, and that installed as Exchange ActiveSync. The one I installed second is not attached to my Office 365 account, and that one installed as Microsoft Exchange.

I don’t know if it is any help to you, but in my Outlook 2010 (just recently reinstalled and set up last week because MS transitioned my hotmail accounts to their new “Outlook Mail” servers) both of my hotmail.com accounts set up automatically as Microsoft Exchange.
I did some research and found this page which may help you
