This is a post by Mark Shuttleworth, Founder of Ubuntu and Canonical

“I’m writing to let you know that we will end our investment in Unity8, the phone and convergence shell. We will shift our default Ubuntu desktop back to GNOME for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.”

I can’t help thinking in all the similarities between Unity and the Windows’ metro interface. Would Microsoft ever get back to the classic desktop?

Yes! kind of glad of this. I like Ubuntu but never grew to like Unity totally. Gnome is better, and I understand Ubuntu is dumping mobile platform too. Focus on desktop will be good news.

I like Ubuntu, but Unity finally drove me away after a year.  I tried Fedora and Debian with Gnome 3, but it’s frckin fugly as well.  The classic Gnome is still best, like the classic Windows desktop was.  It just works.  It’s probably an option to switch to Classic, but it should be the default!

So far, happy with the mods that the Mint devs made to the desktops for Mate and Cinnamon.

Surprised to hear Ubuntu has finally caved on their silly project.  It’s about time.

Touchscreens still have not replaced keyboards and mice for me!  🙂
