I have a Dell Dimension 4300 that came with MS Works preinstalled but no installation disks came with it or I can’t find it. Somehow MS Word got corrupted and will no longer load and run.

We have tried to uninstall both Works and Word with no success.

Any ideas of what we can do to try and fix this problem so can I can run Word again?

    Thanks in advance.

We have also tried repeatedly to install Word from an Office installation CD but it never seems to “take” properly. After it is installed, when I try to run Word, when it brings up the logo screen it goes to the old version of Word that came with Works and is now corrupted. For all the other old Office products, it brings up the old serial number and registration from the original version but the other products run OK.

Any suggestions that you might have on how we can fix this problem so Word will run again will be greatly appreciated.

I’m not sure I can help, but I think more information is needed.
      1. What version of MS Works & what version of Word/Office was installed?
      2. What error message, if any, do you get?
      3. What exactly happens when you start Word?

It shows as Word 9. It is the version of Word 2000 that came bundled with Works. The system is 2 years old — so it dates back to 2002.
When you start up word, it brings up the Word logo screen and then freezes with a message out of memory or out of disk space. System has plenty of memory and plenty of disk.
The weird thing is that I installed Office 2000 and for all of the apps it keeps referring on the logo screen to the name and id with that came with the original Works/Word. I tried an install to a new directory with a different name and id code, and it still thinks it is using the old one.
I have tried uninstalling Works/Word but it wants the system CD which we do not believe came with the machine — or if it did we can’t find it. Are there any programs that will uninstall Works/Word without needing a CD. I think if I can get rid of the old version, I could reinstall from my Office 2000 Professional disks without a problem.

Hmmm. I’ve never used Works, but Works Suite 2000: How to Completely Remove Works Suite 2000 seems to indicate that you need the disk to uninstall it. I could find nothing else either on the MS KB or the public newsgroups (or in fact any newsgroups) regarding uninstalling it. I wonder if there’s a registry hack.

Lack of your installation disk may be tricky – certainly my Dimension 4300 came with a disk set.
Don’t know if I can help – but Uninstalling Word (or most office products) tends to not really uninstall – MS seems to have the quixotic belief that you really didn’t mean it and couldn’t possibly have wanted to really remove such a fine, fault-free product.

I found that the way to make Word really go away was
          a) save any documents or templates I wanted
          run uninstall
          c) delete the relevant branches of the C:Program FilesMicrosoft Office tree
          d) Climb into the registry and remove Software keys that relate to the product – not for the faint hearted

Once all that is done, it is usually possible to install a “clean” copy of the product again.

Perhaps Dell will send a replacement installation CD.
