This just started to occur, emails with a *.pps file attached will not open; I get an error mssg that my virus program is not letting it open and a “viewer is not available”.
This is a new development that just started about 2 weeks ago, prior to that time it worked just fine.
running office 10 and version 14 of outlook 32 bit

Which virus program? What happens if you disable it (for a test with a pps attachment which you trust)?

I do not use any antivirus, only the included microsoft Security essintials.

Do you have PowerPoint, or just PowerPoint Viewer? (That would depend on which edition of Office 2010 you have.)

Could you give the exact wording of the error message?

Which version of Windows are you using?

        “PowerPoint can’t read C:desktopName.pps
The presentation cannot be opened. Your antivirus program may prevent you from opening the presentation. To fix this problem, make sure your antivirus program is current and working correctly. If the problem persists and the presentation is from someone that you trust, turn off your antivirus program, and then try to open the presentation again. If you do this, make sure you turn on your antivirus program again after you open the presentation.

also: “this file cannot be previewed because there is no previewer installed for it”
I am using a full version of powerpoint 2010
it all worked well for a long time and just recently stopped and is giving me grief…..

Does it work with a clean boot?

        Thanks jerry
you hit it on the nose
did a clean boot, disabled a file called “HsMgr” not in the Win32 folder and that “fixed” the issue.
the file was in the C:windowssystemHsMgr.exe envoke and HsMgr64.exe Envoke.
not sure if a virus or otherwise, will keep an eye on it
        again, Thanks

Here are the files involved from msconfig:

          C:windowssyswow64HsMgr.exe Envoke
          C:windowssystemHsMgr64.exe Envoke

          Both are found in: HKLMsoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrentVersionRun

          thanks again

            Update:
After several reboots still had the problem!!!!
More investigation and turning services on or off the problem is NOT as above
I turned these services back on since they did not seem to be the issue…..
            Final result turned off:
“Steam” (for games) and who I think the culprit is:”Video Performer Manager”!!!
Personally I think the video manager is the issue but for now they are both off and when I get more time on my hands will try to put “steam” back on.
            Thanks

I also had this problem of PPS files refusing to open. I tried numerous solutions and finally found one that worked.
I downloaded ppsfix.exe from the Microsoft web site and instant solution, it’s about 40 kb in size. The only annoyance now is a temporary splash screen when the pps files open.
My version of Office is an older wersion, but if I remember correctly it also works for Office 2010.
A search of the MS web site should locate it.

That appears to be a sound card driver:
      http://www.file.net/process/hsmgr.exe.html

Not sure why that would cause the problem but its hard to argue with your results.

I’d run an alternate scanning program on your hard drive just to make sure. It’s always possible that the pps file in question was, in fact, infected.

      Group "L" (Linux Mint)
with Windows 10 running in a remote session on my file server
