• Unable to Wake from Sleep (S3)

I recently upgraded my system from an MSI Intel Motherboard to an AMD Ryzen Mobo.

My new system (details in my signature below) will start from a full shut down without any problems.

My system will restart from being “fully awake” without any problems.

My system will enter Sleep (S3) when I select and click on “Sleep” from the Windows Power options.

After entering Sleep after a system Start, or restart, when I press the start button on my system case, the Hard Disk LED flashes briefly and then remains on steady. System fans start running. My monitor screen remains black. Nothing further happens. I then have to shut down by pressing and holding down the system start button; and then cold start/reboot again.

The System then boots normally but on each occasion, Windows creates a 4GB Memory dump.

The inability to wake from sleep happens if I set BIOS to “Wake from BIOS” and also if a set BIOS to “Wake from OS”.

I have enabled Wake timers so as to permit Acronis True Image to Wake my system in order to perform weekly backups. However, although the system starts to wake up, it freezes as described above. (This was not an issue with my Intel Mobo).

Setting Windows Power settings to permit Sleep, or Hibernate, or Hybrid Sleep makes no difference. If I enter the S3 state, I can only use my system if I do a cold startup/boot.

I put this matter to MSI Support, and although they were extremely helpful over several weeks, they have been unable to duplicate the problem using an identical setup in their labs.

Perhaps this is a Windows issue?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

There is a thread with similar problems but on Win7. Perhaps you can glean a fix from reading through this.

@PKCano:  Thank you.  My issue is that I am unable to WAKE from sleep.  The issue appeared after installation of a new Motherboard.  It worked fine with several previous mobos over a number of years.  My first impression was that this is a mobo issue, but MSI have excluded this possibility after numerous lab. tests.  Hence my query:  could this be a Windows issue, even though I changed no Windows settings after changing over to my new Mobo?  (Unfortunately, the issue is perhaps complicated since it coincides with both the arrival of Windows 1903 and my new AMD Mobo!)

The other thread might give you an idea what sttings to look at though. They dug pretty deep in sleep-related settings in the OS.

@PKCano:  Thanks once again.  I have tried every conceivable combination to no avail.  I suppose I will have to learn to live with doing full shut-downs; and fresh cold startups to do weekly backups (which is a pity, since I used to let this happen in the early morning via “wake up from sleep” triggered by Acronis True Image).

Have you tried disabling “Fast Boot”? It causes some strange issues on some systems.

Sometimes a driver needs to be updated too.

Have you run the power troubleshooter?

@joep517:  Yes, thanks. Fast Boot has been disabled and troubleshooter reveals no issues.  Unfortunately, I can’t role back to an older system backup, because that will take me to my previous MSI Intel system.  So I must somehow get this new setup to work, or learn to live with an inability to wake from sleep.  Somewhat exasperating, to say the least!!

      @ petesmst

The System then boots normally but on each occasion, Windows creates a 4GB Memory dump.

If Windows is creating a *crash* memory dump, I would guess there might be one or more clues buried in that dump.

Did the MSI folks know about that dump file? Did they request a copy to analyze?

If they do not have the expertise to analyze the file, then it’s time to ask for help from software experts for Windows.

Until you rule out information that might be in that dump file, you may be flailing at windmills.

have you checked for a BIOS update?

Have you checked for driver updates?

I recently upgraded my system from an MSI Intel Motherboard to an AMD Ryzen Mobo.

I am gonna go out on a limb and say maybe there is more to your upgrade than that. Did you just drop your old W10 HDD into your new setup??
