In Word 2007 under Windows 7, I am noticing for the first time a strange behavior. I know in Word 2002 and OSs up through Vista, undo worked on whole words. Now I find on certain files, that undo works only character by character, not whole words. The drop down list for undo shows, for example typing “e.”

I notice that in opening a new file, undo works as expected. Ditto for almost all other existing files. The current file for which this behavior occurs was sent to me by a prospective author. This is a DOCX file, presumably originated in Word 2007 (or 2010)?

I have found others online who experienced this behavior, but no solution. One suggestion said to Open and Repair the file, but this had no effect.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, Ron

I can’t replicate your environment, and this may not be relevant to your document, but I thought I would mention it anyway. Undo generally operates on AutoCorrect, AutoText, and AutoFormat actions independently from the word or character which was typed. You can see this two-step Undo process most often in the case of “Smart Quotes,” but it pops up in other cases as well. If someone were to have attached an AutoText or AutoCorrect to the letter e, or if it was AutoFormat’ed, then you might see occasional instances of Undo typing e alone. Just a thought.

Good thought. I will test this premise. I wish I could post the file itself, but it is a proprietary manuscript.

        Many thanks!

Copied whole contents to new blank Doc. Undo works. Duh. Thanks, Ron
