Unexpected .Net 5.0.15 Update

Until today I didn’t have .Net 5 installed on my system.  Out of the blue WU advises that it wants to install the .Net 5.0.15 update (KB5012416).  This doesn’t make any sense to me so I start checking around and Edge and .Net 5.0.14  Runtime show in Apps and Control Panel Program Feature as having been installed today.  I know that Edge and other store apps update automatically but the .Net 5.0.14 Runtime installation seems odd to me.  I’m wondering if its a mistake by Microsoft and I should hold-off on letting WU install the update.

Has anybody seen this before?

OK, I see that you are talking about .NET Runtime. I checked my Control Panel>Program and Features and I see .Net 5.0.15 Runtime was installed yesterday and Edge was updated today.

Is Runtime specific to Edge? I think so.

My guess is that .NET 5.0.15 is for all apps (other than Edge) that call for .NET 5 and .NET 5.0.x Runtime is for Edge. (I could be wrong about this.)

What happens when you open Edge today? Do you get .NET 5.0.15 Runtime installed?

My understanding is that 5.0.15 (Runtime or not) is a security update.

You sure that you haven’t installed some other software that would have installed .net?

It does not make sense that it would be with an Edge update – I don’t see it here. Typically WU offers up updates once it senses that the software needs updating. You can always uninstall it and see what complains.

WU announced with a download button that Cumulative Update for .NET 5.0 15 Security Update for x64 Client was in the queue and I installed it on April 1. Is that why 5.0.15 Runtime shows up in Apps & Features and in the Control Panel also with a date of April 1? The CU shows up in WU History and the RUNTIME shows up in the Control Panel & Apps & Feature. Are the CU and the RUNTIME somehow related to one another?

And for @EricB, interestingly, my other laptop shows 5.0.14 Runtime in the Control Panel and in Apps & Features, but I haven’t seen a CU for .NET 5.0.14 in the WU queue nor in WU History. So, here it seems that the CU and the Runtime do NOT relate to one another.

So on April 1, on one machine I have the CU 5.0.15 and Runtime 5.0.15 installed and on the other machine, I have only Runtime 5.0.14 installed. Is this odd or not?

You have Edge beta on there, not just Edge. Let me find a machine that has the beta on there.

The .Net 5.0.15 Update is a security update and replaces the Feb. 2022 5.0.14 Security Update.  And, at least on my system, this update is not shown as a CU by Windows Update.

I have the .NET 5.0.5 Runtime version .15 on my Windows 10 Pro computer since early March but I went and fetched it then after reading a post here about it. I keep WU disabled most of the time so I have to manually find updates and install them. I’ve done it this way for so many years I can’t recall when I last let WU run wild all the time.

I have versions of .NET going back as far as version one on this 4 year old computer.

I just fetched Windows Desktop Runtime 6.0.3 x64 since .NET 5 is going out of support very soon. If I were you, I would only question why you were not offered the 5.0.5.15 update sooner and I would install it now. (There are possible advantages sometimes to fetching such updates manually as I did instead of waiting for Microsoft to get around to offering it on WU).

Yes, I saw it on one of my laptops with a date of April 1 — happened the day before it happened to you. But, it (5.0.14) didn’t get installed via WU. It got installed under the radar, somehow. And no signs of a 5.0.15 now or ever in the WU queue.

On the other laptop, on the same day, WU delivered CU 5.0.15 and no signs of 5.0.14 ever having been installed before that.

I have Edge but not .NET runtime.

I don’t use Edge and absolutely, positively did not install any software.  The .Net 5.0.14 Runtime showed up all on its own.

It would not have installed on it’s own.  Something brought it down.  And then once it was on your machine, it then needed updating as the March update is a security patch.

It could be a printer software – it could be graphic card software – back in the day AMD used to install this ANNOYING .net based graphic card interface that would trigger .net updates.

Something installed needs .net 5, but not Edge.

I’m in the same boat as @Eric B, but my bone is with 5.0.15 (and not 5.0.14). It came down in the WU queue for one of my laptops on April 1 (or maybe April 2).
No other Microsoft.NETCore.App has ever been installed on this machine, as indicated by ASoft .NET Version Detector. See attached. So, there’s nothing there that 5.0.15 was updating. It is totally new and seems to have come out of the blue.

If some software needed it, I have no idea what it could be, as I haven’t installed any new software for a very long time. And if WAS some software that needed 5.0.14 or 5.0.13 or some version even before that, there would be some indication in .NET Version Detector that one or more of these earlier versions had been installed sometime in the past. But, no earlier version is listed in .NET Version Detector.

There’s no .NET 5 anything, other than this new 5.0.15

Like we did in the era of .net 3.5 you can always uninstall it and then see what complains.

The first time I did it and then the AMD graphics portal didn’t work I was like…. uh that’s what installed it!

Back in the .net 3.5 day I’d uninstall .net completely.  So in this case, not just uninstall the .net security update, remove .net 5 completely and see what complains. Of course take a backup first 🙂

I’ll ask around and see if there is an easy way to track down what’s using .net in the 5 era.

The timing with an Edge update could be mere coincidence.  Since I don’t know what installed the .Net 5.0.14 Runtime I don’t want to experiment and uninstall it to see what might break.   At this point I’m going to install the security update and live with it.  I don’t like it but I think I’m better off leaving it alone.

Edge updated this morning.  I have no .NET 5 anything.

I need some advice on which .NET 5.0.15 to install on one of my machines in a download from the MS-Catalog.

I have two similar devices, both Win10/Pro 21H2 x64, both DELLs. One is older and not eligible for Win 11; it is model 7569; the other is a newer model 5482 and IS eligible for Win 11, although I haven’t installed it.

They are basically clones of one another – i.e., they have the same software on them (because when I install software on one device, I install it on the other) and they both have the same data files (because I synchronize those files between the two machines).

My current situation is that WU delivered .NET 5.0.15 to the 7569, but not to the 5482. The 7569 never had the superceded .NET 5.0.14 on it, but WU delivered .NET 5.0.15 to it anyway. The 5482 DOES have the superceded .NET 5.0.14 on it, but WU has NOT delivered 5.0.15 – not yet at least.

Since .NET 5.0.15 is a Security Update, I think I need to get it on the 5482 by downloading it and installing it.
But, I need some help in choosing which .NET 5.0.15 to download from the MS-Catalog.

Here are some facts:
This is the .NET 5.0.15 (a Security Update) that was installed on my 7569 (a Win10/Pro 21H2 x64-bit machine) as listed in WU History.

Afterwards .NET Version Detector lists it as this on the 7569.

On the 5482,.NET Version Detector lists .NET 5.0.14 as currently installed:

MS Catalog lists 12 downloads for KB5012416:

I am guessing that my choice would be either a) aspnetcore-runtime-5.0.15-win-x64 or b) dotnet-runtime-5.0.15-win-x64.
But, perhaps someone here can tell me which of these is the right one to select for download?

Open a command prompt window and enter the command:  dotnet –info

Here are the Command Prompt responses on each machine. As you can see the 7569 (royal blue title bar) has 5.0.15 (b/c WU installed it) and the 5482 (teal green title bar) has 5.0.14 (b/c at sometime in the distant past, it was installed [how or when I don’t know]. .Net Core and .Net Framework are different.  BTW, Microsoft dropped “Core” as part of the name beginning with version 5.  I didn’t install the security update manually, WU took care of it.  You might want to give WU some more time and also make sure that you haven’t inadvertently hidden any updates.

WU detection 99.99999% of the time is spot on.  If it thinks something needs a patch it offers it up.  If .net security update is not offered up to a machine via the WU interface you probably don’t need it.  Don’t immediately jump to the conclusion that machines are identical – there could be vendor apps that are different.

I’ve waited two weeks and I have also checked WUSHOWHIDE.
I also make a record of everything that gets hidden ever in WUSHOWHIDE and make a note when I unhide something. I also keep a record of WU History throughout the machine’s various versions of Win10 (1903, 1909, 2004, 20H2, 21H1, 21H2) and I can find no record of 5.0.14 nor its KB file 5011093. Maybe, it’s in Events somewhere, but I’d have to figure out how to look. So, it’s still a mystery as to how or when 5.0.14 got installed on this machine in the first place. It had to have been done in the background, unbeknownst to me, when I used some app sometime (but what app and when, I don’t know).

5.0.15 is supposed to be a Security Update, and since 5.0.14 is on that machine, you’d think that WU would be delivering it. But, that might not be the correct thinking either, b/c 5.0.15 got installed on the other machine without 5.0.14 ever having been installed.

I’m straight out befuddled about no 5.0.15 coming down from WU for the 5482, but now I’m straight on .NET Framework vs .NET (Core in the name now dropped since 5.0)

I don’t know if it makes a difference but I used Group Policy for Windows Update on my Win 10 Pro system to enable updates for “Other Microsoft Products”.

I bet that’s it!! I have Win10/Pro and I know that I didn’t specify any Group Policy setting for ‘install updates for other Microsoft Microsoft Products’, but I just now checked Windows Update > Advanced Options > Update options and I had it turned off on the 5482 machine. [All of which means there are two places where you can effect this setting.]

I checked the same WU setting on the 7569 and it is turned on.

Now, on the 5482, I’ve turned it on. We’ll see what happens.

I now get to say “SEE this is why I say choose ” ‘install updates for other Microsoft Microsoft Products” to anyone who asks why that setting is important.  (note this isn’t specifically for WCHS, this is because this setting came up the other day in the forum and some folks were saying that they never set this).  Excellent detection work and kudos!!

Most likely it came from the MS Store since MS Store updates are not controlled by WUmgr settings.

There’s nothing like that in MS Stores, as far as I can tell — no .NET 5.0.x’s at all.

No. Microsoft store downloads are blocked on my PC and I don’t think that WUmgr has access to Microsoft store.

In WuMgr, under the Auto Update tab, there is a box to check or uncheck for Disable Store Auto Update. This refers to Microsoft Stores.

Today, on the 5482 WU delivered 5.0.15 after I had turned on WU>Advanced options> Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows two days ago.

It came down when the WU queue was refreshed according to the Windows schedule for doing so. I have GP=2 notify download/install so I clicked on the ‘Download’ button to install it.
