    Got this warning in Belarc:

“EOL-Microsoft End of Life Microsoft .NET Core 5.0 is vulnerable and no security updates are provided by the vendor.

    Found this tool :

.NET Uninstall Tool command line. Require installation.

Couldn’t find portable free 3rd party .Net uninstall app.

Belarc Advisor tells me that also. However, I have unistalled 5.0 and rebooted. I installed the tool you show (Asoft.net version) and .NET 5.0 no longer appears in the list of installed .NET versions. I think Belarc Advisor may be in error regarding this.

There is more than uninstalling just core 5.x
SDK 5.X should be uninstalled, aspnetcore 5.x should be uninstalled..and probably desktop app .net 5.x

I have no evidence at the current time to determine whether .NET is backward compatible. Will later versions of .NET will run programs built with older versions of .NET?

As a final note: .NET is not .NET Framework

      • I may be asking the obvious but which application depends on the .Net 5.0 runtime and what do you think will happen if you uninstall it?

I may be asking the obvious but which application depends on the .Net 5.0 runtime and what do you think will happen if you uninstall it?

It’s not obvious which application depends on a .NET runtime and I have found nothing in documentation yet that allows viewing of .NET runtimes for programs that use specific runtimes.

Uninstalling .NET runtimes may result in surprise program execution failure.

Almost all current documentation on .NET (runtimes) is geared toward software development, not user implementation. That myopic approach makes it very difficult to track software evolution from user perspective.

That was the short form. If you want to read the to-date long form:

I don’t know if I have an app that depends on .NET Core 5.x which I want to uninstall when/if I’ll find a proper portable uninstall app.

HandBrake app required .NET desktop runtime 5.x now the app works with .NET desktop runtime 6.x

Used GeekUninstaller portable to uninstall every .Net 5 .

Alex, can you send me a link to what you installed as your replacement for .Net Core 5.0.x. I am not very computer savvy and am confused by the several download pages that I located. Please and thank you.

I have .NET Runtime Core v5.0.17 installed (i.e., not the entire SDK for software developers), and unlike my .NET Frameworks, my .NET Core Runtime v5.0.17 is listed at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features. Is there any reason why the I couldn’t simply uninstall it from the Control Panel, or does the .NET Uninstall Tool do a cleaner uninstall? As a general rule I normally uninstall any software listed in Programs and Features using the portable edition of Revo Uninstaller Free just to clean up any orphaned files or registry entries that might be left behind by the “native” uninstaller.

If you have a Dell computer note that the latest SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 (rel. 23-Jun-2022) now requires “Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 and .NET Core Runtime v5.0.14” per the minimum system requirements posted <here>. This is the first release of SupportAssist to require a .NET Core Runtime and I have no idea why Dell would release software in June 2022 that requires a .NET Core Runtime v5.0.x that reached end of support on 10-May-2022. My understanding is that the “classic” .NET Framework 4.5 and later versions (for Windows PCs only) are backward-compatible with apps that were built with earlier versions of the .NET Framework, but that newer .NET Core Runtimes (multi-platform for Windows, macOS, Linux, etc.) are not backward-compatible. That means if Dell users want to use SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 to run update checks for Dell software and drivers or run Dell hardware diagnostics then they must leave the unsupported .NET Core Runtime v5.0.17 installed on their system – replacing the .NET Core Runtime v5.x with a newer .NET Core Runtime v6.x or v7.x doesn’t work.

In theory, if you uninstall .NET Core Runtime v5.0.17 and have software on your system that requires .NET Runtime v5.0.17 you should be prompted to re-install .NET Runtime v5.0.17 the next time you launch that software. In practice, I’m not sure how well that actually works. There are several users reporting in Dell’s SupportAssist for PCs forum board that the new SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 installer simply throws a generic “Installation failed. Try again later…” message.  A few users discovered that their SupportAssist installation log included “Dell.SupportAssist.Client.SupportAssistInstaller.MainWindow – Unexpeceted Error Occured during Asp Or Dot Net Core Installation“, and after they manually downloaded and installed .NET Core Runtime v.5.x from https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet they found the latest SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 installer ran to completion. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that those SupportAssist installation errors are mainly due to sloppy programming by Dell.

Just an aside that I’m not a fan of SupportAssist (it’s buggy and hogs too many system resources) and my Dell SupportAssist service is disabled so this program won’t launch at boot-up.  I use Dell Update v4.x to check for Dell software and driver updates.

I updated to .NET 6.x. Currently .NET 6.0.7 desktop runtime.
You don’t need to install/update .NET if you don’t have apps using it/compatible with the new version.
