• Unread message count in Public Folder

One of our Public Folders is teasing us a little.
The counter for unread messages shown both in the bottom left-hand corner of the status bar and in the Outlook Bar (number in parenthesis beside a shortcut to the folder) shows 5 less than the actual number of unread items in the folder. If there are 5 or less unread items the unread count is 0.

    Any ideas?

We are running Exchange 5.5 SP4 with an Outlook 2000 client.

normally, i’d blame RPC problems but they come and go and usually should the previous unread count which varies.
if it’s consistant, i’d look for some items marked private or check for filters.

you might want to also try outlook spy or the mapi viewer (in the the platform sdk) and see if there are any hidden files.

Thanks for the advice, Mary but there are no filters applied and Sensitivity for all items is Normal.
Someone has just added a new item, so now there are 64 instead of 63 (OK so far) but beleive it or not the Unread count is now at 4294967293

i’ve never seen anything that wierd, but have seen the counts remain at the old levels for several minutes or longer after new mail arrives or some is deleted.

is it like this on all workstations or just some?

does just one folder show this behavior? I’d try creating a new one and moving the items, then delete to old one and change the mail address on the new one. it’s easier than hacking with outlook spy.

if others are acting weird, i’d reboot the server.
