• Update fails at last reboot

I am rebuilding a pc and started with a fresh installation of Win 10 – the installation file installed 1809 without issues and then I went into the update process for 1903, thinking once done and fully updated, I am doing an image and start adding my programs.

The download and installation of 1903 went through fine (though at point it got stuck at 99% for an extended period). After full installation, it went through the reboot process but now it seems not completing. I had to disconnect the pc last night due to a storm and now when I start it, the HP logo comes up, a second HP page shows very quickly, then the MS square appears briefly and then screen goes dark and nothing further happens.

    What are my options?

The way it sort of boots into a blank screen sounds like what happens to me from time to time. While it’s no fix, I’m able to get around it by pressing the reset button, or sometimes power down and then power up. For me, that has worked after 1-3 attempts. I also have to be patient and wait for what seems like a long time (perhaps up to 15 minutes) before deciding it hasn’t worked.

Sometimes my machine will boot just fine.

As I say, this isn’t a fix, but a possible work around for you. I hope it works.

Thanks Tsman,  I don’t like the reset button but have already tried this twice, each time giving it a long time to finally “jump over whatever hurdle” is there but so far no luck. Not sure if something in the final update is corrupted and given that it is a new build, I might be better off redoing the installation at this early stage. Just downloading a fresh installation media for 1909, so at least I don’t have to move from an earlier version to 1909.

Press F8 repeatedly as soon as you see the HP logo and Windows should offer you a start up menu. Choose Safe Mode and see if it works.
If Safe Mode is OK shut down and reboot. This sometimes works.
If not return to Safe Mode and run this from an Admin Command Prompt:
      dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions
If none of that works it may be a reinstall.

      cheers, Paul
