I have a document (attached) that has cross-reference fields in a few sections (this is an instruction manual). The cross-references have been updating nicely up until this afternoon. I was selecting the entire document, then selecting Update Field. This afternoon, when I tried that, it inserted page breaks between the fields. This takes the current document from 17 to 27 pages. Am I trying to update all of the fields the wrong way? It works just fine if I update each item one by one, but that’s a bit time consuming.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Becky

The page break is getting absorbed into the hidden bookmark that marks the cross-reference. I’m not sure why the behavior is different when you update an individual cross-reference; I would think that page break would show up either way. (I can’t get rid of them now!)

If Word views the preceding page break as part of the referenced paragraph, this makes some sort of sense. Not sure if there is an easy fix to that. A work-around would be to place a slim paragraph above the paragraph of interest so that the page break is not included in the reference. (I tried this, but as a person who doesn’t use hidden bookmarks, I couldn’t figure out how to replace the bad hidden bookmark with a good hidden bookmark…)

So, basically, I shot myself in the foot by inserting page breaks at the beginning of each paragraph! bash
I removed all of the page breaks I put in this morning (at least there’s only 16 chapters!), and inserted new ones a paragraph before my chapter headings. Now I have a small, blank paragraph before each chapter, but my reference fields are happy again.

        Thanks so much!
