I am setting up a Windows 7 computer for someone and have noticed being offered update KB982670 whereas this update is not installed on my Windows 7 computer nor is it being offered as an update. Why would Microsoft offer an update to one computer and not the other and should I go ahead and install this update?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

That KB is for .Net version 4. If you don’t have it installed on one of your computers you won’t be offered the update. HTH

AskWoody MVPSeptember 2, 2013 at 10:32 am #1409838Hi boomer,
Microsoft/Windows updates are dependent on the Windows features enabled and the Microsoft software already installed. A snippet from the KB 982670 page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982670
Specifically, the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile is released as a recommended update that may be installed automatically on Windows Vista and Windows 7. The Client Profile is released as an optional update for Windows XP. In Windows XP, you must manually run WU and select the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile.
The .NET Framework 4 is available on Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 and on Windows Server 2008 R2 as an optional update.
You’d need to run a comparison of software/updates (and any OEM bloatware) installed on both computers to find out why it’s offered/installed for one and not the other.
