Lately, when I click on an email to open it when in Outlook Express, often I get a dialogue box come up telling me I need to update Office and to insert the Office installation disk. I tried putting the disk in the CD ROM drive to update whatever was causing this problem, but it took forever, and it became clear that no updating was actually happening, so I took the CD out and closed the dialogue box. Nevertheless, this annoying dialogue box still keeps coming up when accessing email, and it has also started appearing when I am trying to log into webmail programs.

I have thoroughly checked for viruses and spyware, and all appears clean. I am having no other problems with Office or my computer generally.

I have tried repairing Office, but the dialogue box asking me to update Office still appears in the situations described above.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going on here, please?.

Does the dialog appear to be related to any particular mail format (e.g., plain text, HTML, other) or attachment or embedded items? If there is a pattern, that might help with the diagnosis…

Hi again jscher2000. There is some pattern, I guess, because the update box appears when opening some emails and not others, but I haven’t worked out why! Will try to identify any patterns of this problem persists after updating Office 2000.

Cheers, and as always, thanks for your willingness to assist.

It is known bug in Office Update. Workaround is: copy the entire Office Installation CD to separate folder on your hard drive and when prompted, navigate to this folder.

Your version of Office is outdated. If you did not install any updates, install them in following order:
      1. Office 2000 Service Release 1a (SR-1a)
      2.Office 2000 Update: Service Pack 3 (SP3)
(You don’t need to install SP-2). Then for Excel:
      3. Excel 2000 Security Patch: KB830349 that updating Excel to v.9.0.0.8216
      4. Security Update for Excel 2000 (KB873372) that updating Excel to v.9.0.0.8924 – most recent version.

If you use Word and Outlook (not Outlook Express) – you need to install separate updates for them which were released after SP-3. (For Word: KB824936, KB830347, KB887977, KB895333; for Outlook: KB811167).

Microsoft recommends that you use the Office Product Updates site to determine if your computer requires these updates before installing it.

You are quite right – I did need to update my Office 2000 suite. I have now done so, and hopefully this will have solved the problem. Thanks a lot for your advice.
