So, Windows 10 recently told me there was a new Windows 10 Feature Update ready to install, which would upgrade my Windows 10 laptop from version 1909 to 2004. Stupidly I told it to go ahead, having not read about all the issues it’s causing for those who have already done the upgrade, but fear not!!! After spending half an hour or so preparing to download, then another half hour or so downloading, then another hour or so preparing the upgrade, then another hour or so performing the upgrade, followed by another half hour or so of dot spinning on the boot screen, I was presented with……. the same old version of 1909, but with an error message to say the update failed.

I did a bit of googling to see if anyone else had this problem, and there were a few words of advice to follow involving clearing of caches, disabling anti-virus, running troubleshooters, stopping and starting services, etc, but none of them fixed the problem. The upgrade option was still available in the update section, but it just wouldn’t install. At one stage, during a reboot after an attempted install, the screen went a corrupt mess of rapidly changing white, green and red pixels. It’s never done that before. Luckily switching it off and on again fixed the video problem, but I’m still on version 1909.

Windows has decided to stop offering me the upgrade for now. Glad it didn’t go through after reading about the problems it’s been causing for a lot of people.

Looking at the update history it says:
    Feature Updates (2)
Feature update to Windows 10, version 2004
    Failed to install on ‎11/‎06/‎2020 – 0xc1900101
Feature update to Windows 10, version 1909 (2)
    Successfully installed on ‎6/‎03/‎2020

If anyone’s wondering about the specs of my laptop, it’s one of these: https://www.laptoparena.net/hp/notebook-hp-15-bw063au-2dh18pa-black-36002

      “Storage: 128 GB SSD”

Do you have enough free space on your SSD drive ? You need at least 20-30GB+ free space for Windows to create previous version backup file, Windows.old

0xC1900101 is a generic rollback code, and usually indicates that an incompatible driver is present.

So why not display the driver’s name instead of sending the user to hunt for it in logs ?

For the same reason that WFW 3.11, W95, W98, W7, etc. would state “Incorrect DLL Loaded” with no indication of the incorrect DLL. Lazy programmers at Microsoft.

Does anyone have any insider knowledge on how likely it is that NVIDIA will issue new drivers to allow ver 2004 to be successfully installed? I have an old GeForce 210 whose latest driver (issued in 2006) is 342.01 and I believe there are problems with any driver lower that the 400 area, which is why MS won’t allow the install. Wondering if I’ve either got to accept I have to remain on ver 1909 or buy a more up to date graphics card.

My guess would be it’s unlikely that nvidia will issue updated drivers for the GeForce 210.
For the mean time, your probably on the most stable version of Win10 at 1909.
Upgrading the graphics card could be a possibility dependng on what existing hardware you have.

no problem. you can also wait a few months more until Microsoft lifts the 2004 upgrade block on their end for old nvidia geforce 210 & older graphics cards with a future cumulative update that may allow old geforce graphics hardware to work with v2004, regardless of driver version.

but for now, stay with the 1909 version until Microsoft squashes more bugs with 2004
