I just had reason to connect to my home lab server (2012 R2 Standard) from a Windows 7 Pro box. Upon logging in I was confronted with a “Reboot to update” box. As 2012 R2 is supposedly supported until October, I rebooted the server without further thought.
Upon the server reappearing, I was able to connect to file shares from the Win7 box but not login via plain Remote Desktop. Ugh!
As the server was nearby, I jumped on the console and checked what update had just been installed. KB5021294, says the system. Uninstall! sez I.
— Doh! Cue doing it again but with shutting down automatic updates first.
After Redmond’s latest corrupdate was purged from the server, the two old friends resumed conversation. Said corrupdates have been permanently banned absent Herself saying something is really, really needed. The server hardware is going to Linux, just like its twin sister, sooner rather than later I suppose.
So much for “supported.” The phrase “constructive dismissal” comes to mind. Remember that next time y’all are tempted to pay the Danegeld.
