Given all the issues with windows update ( pausing, win show/hide, turning it on and off , etc) is there any consensus about using MS Update Catalog (MSUC) for the updates and using sites that allow you to  to download upgrades. I found this site that will allow for the manual install of Win 10 2004. This way I can turn off all the services that relate to updating and upgrading without using windows update and only turn them back on when I want to update or upgrade.

I use Belarc Advisor to tell me which updates I need and this site to tell me when it’s safe to install them. For the past several months I have downloaded what I need from MSUC. I did this because when it came time to install the updates using the ordinary method at times I received updates that I don’t want or need and have to uninstall them.

If you haven’t read any of my previous posts, know that I am not a techie and lack the skills that most of the forum members seem to have. Hence, this question may appear to show my ignorance.

There is no problem with downloading updates from the Catalog and installing them manually.

If you want a specific version, there is no problem with downloading the ISO for the current  from Microsoft or downloading legit ISOs for other versions from Heidoc.net using their Download Tool.

But I would not trust updates or ISOs from other sources because you never know what you are getting.

Knowing which sites carry legit updates can be tricky. We have sufficient experience with Heidoc to know where their files come from – direct from Microsoft, Heidoc merely points you to the correct files – so are happy to recommend them.

Thank you PK and Paul for your replies. Do you both recommend using Heidoc instead of downloading the 2004 upgrade directly from Microsoft (MS)? The link I found for MS is here.

I’m now on Win 10 1909 Build 1863.1016. I plan to stick with 1909 until it goes EOL I don’t intend to upgrade to 2004 until I have to.

      Stay safe,

You should download the v2004 ISO from Microsoft right before MS releases the next version (20H2?) so you get the latest ISO to save for a rainy day. If you want older versions that are no longer available through MS, then use Heidoc.

PK, how will I know when that time will arrive? In the past, Woody, or you,  started a post that gave the forum members a “heads up” to save an ISO? Is there a plan to do that again? If not, think about doing so since I’m (and maybe others, too) are clueless as to the correct timing of the release of the next version.

      Best,

Most likely there will be mention of it ahead of time. Stay tuned.
