OK, I’m getting tired of the offers to update FF to 7.0.1. Has anyone out there who has already upgraded had any problems with the following add-ons?
    No-Script
    Flash Block
    Ad Block Plus
    Grease Monkey
    WOT
    XMarks
    TACO
    Mail-to-this!

Your comments are awaited and appreciated.

BTW: I forgot to mention I’m currently using 6.0.2

try this add-on to 6.0.2 then upgrade this allows for most add ons to be compatible. A lot off add ons are not compatible because they are looking for a specific version, this add on prevents that. It also allows you ro report what add ons are not compatible and they send a report to the author. I know WOT works with Version 7.XXX

I don’t use all of those add on’s but WOT trust works fine with 7.0.1 as does IE Tab and everything else, no problems with any add on though Mozilla said some wouldn’t work that hasn’t been my experience. And I’ve had the new version since the day it came out. :^)

      Hi RG,
When FF releases a new version, I use Revo then do a clean install.

      • #1304220

        Hi RG,
When FF releases a new version, I use Revo then do a clean install.

I am still having problems installing over FF 3.16. Install hangs when checking Add Ons so I must have a bad Add On that causes the install to freeze.

I have never used Revo, if I download and run Revo will that completely clear out FF 3.X so that I can install latest version of FF, hopfully with success.

I had to uninstall Flash Block, before I could get Adblock Plus to work again. Flash block is’nt compatable with 7.01

      • #1301367

I use search status 1.36 and the google page rank no longer displays. Bit of a minger FF 7.1, its a bit quicker but no other obvious advantages for me.

I’m using FF 9.0a2 as my primary browser, but I also have 7.0.1 and 8.0b2 installed. On all three, I’m using the following extensions:[INDENT]
            Adblock Plus
            Adblock Plus Element Hiding Helper
            Check Compatibility
            FireFTP
            Google Shortcuts
            IETab 2
            Image Zoom
            Menu Editor
            NoScript
            PrefBar
            Slim Add-ons Manager
            SmoothWheel
            Stylish
            TabMixPlus
            Tiny Menu
            Toolbar Buttons
            Unhide Passwords
            WOT (World of Trust) [/INDENT]

The key to using most extensions with newer versions of FF is to increase the maxversion setting in the extension’s install.rdf file. If you don’t have your extensions on file, you need to download them. After doing so:[INDENT]
            1) rename the one you want to work on from (for example) example.xpi to example.zip
            2) unzip example.zip
            3) open the install.rdf file using any text editor, such as notepad
            4) locate the maxversion setting and increase it. I use 50.0
            5) save the changed install.rdf file
            6) rezip all unzipped files and folders
            7) rename example.zip to example.xpi
            8) install the updated extension from FF’s Extensions Manager (“Install Add-on from File” from the drop-down menu in the little gear-shaped gizmo at the top of the page) [/INDENT]

I can’t guarantee that this will work for all extensions, but it should work for most.

If you choose to not install Addon Compatibility Reporter, you can choose to edit the addon as stated above. If you do choose to edit each addon, you can use programs like 7Zip to open the .xpi file (in Windows Explorer, right-click and choose Open Archive), edit the install.rdf file (select and right-click the file and choose Edit), edit and then save the file, close the editor, confirm the saving of the file in 7Zip, and exit from 7Zip. You have then edited the addon all without having to rename, unzip, edit, save, repack and rename the file. (7Zip should automatically recognize .xpi files as zip files.)

              Ray …

I spelled out the long procedure because I wanted to make sure anyone could do it. Personally, I use the much shorter procedure you describe, except that I have to rename the files (WinZipPro 14.5 doesn’t recognize .xpi files, although newer versions might).

FWIW, I used to use MozBackup, but found that it’s much easier to simply copy the desired profile folder to a different location. Because all of my FF versions use identical profiles (same is true for TB), the chances of losing info due to a munged profile are greatly reduced … simply delete the bad profile and copy a good one in its place.

Also, because I use a partitioned hard drive, I do NOT use the standard installation when installing FF or TB. Using the custom installation allows me to install FF and TB to designated folders on my D: partition. Using the profile managers allows me to install the profile folders in the same location. The ONLY aspects of either program that must be on the C: partition are the respective profiles.ini files.

…you can use programs like 7Zip to open the .xpi file (in Windows Explorer, right-click and choose Open Archive)

              Ray …

I think that needs some further explanation.

First, I’m running Win7 HP SP1. With 7-Zip installed, Windows Explorer’s context menu will show a selection for 7-Zip with sub-menus. Clicking “Open Archive” on the sub-menu will open the .xpi file in a 7-Zip window. Right-clicking on the install.rdf file opens another context menu. Clicking “Open” should open the file in your default text editor, but you may have to click on “Open Outside” if you use one other than Notepad. Otherwise, your explanation remains the same.

What I find interesting is that .xpi is not listed as a filetype supported by 7-Zip, either on the 7-Zip website or in 7-Zip’s options, yet your procedure certainly works.

When you right-click on the file install.rdf, the fourth entry (on mine) of the context menu is “Edit.” Click on it and by default, the file will open in Windows Notepad. After saving and closing Notepad, 7-Zip will ask you to confirm the saving of the file. After doing that, just close 7-Zip and the .xpi file is ready to install.

I use Notepad++. To set it as the program to use to edit a file inside an archive you have opened in 7-Zip, go to Tools > Options > Editor and using button to the left of the Editor box, navigate to where notepad++.exe is located and (double) click on it so that it is in the box. OK out of Options and off you go.

              Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info on setting an external editor (I use UltraEdit … been using it as long as WinZip) to open with the Edit entry. Actually, UEdit opens no matter which of the three (Open, Open Outside, or Edit) I select.

AFAIC, Notepad is useless for the purpose, as it opens the file in one long string. Then, if Word Wrap is selected from the Format menu, it consolidates everything into a block paragraph. M$ should have dumped it with the introduction of Win95.

Notepad++ is nice because often addon authors create install.rdf in something like an html editor. If such an install.rdf file is opened in Windows Notepad, instead of there being a new line, there is only the superscript o. Notepad++ recognizes those as carriage returns/new lines. Also, Notepad++ shows all the line indents which makes editing a lot easier, too. It has other features which makes it very good for editing files like .rdf, .js, and others.

And, like 7Zip, it is free, too!

            • #1302036

FYI, I discovered that once you have the .xpi file unzipped in the 7-Zip window you don’t have to right-click on install.rdf and select Edit from the context menu … just double-clicking on the file will open it in the text editor.

To get back to the topic of FF 7, the extension (or is it a plugin, I never know the distinction) called Readbility is not mentioned. For me it is really indispensable as it changes messy web pages into beautiful printable pages. FF warned that this is not available in FF 7 although they hope it will be eventually. That is the one item I really need; the rest are dispensable.

It is an extension. Judging from its page on the add-ons site (Readability :: Add-ons for Firefox[/url]), it has been updated for Firefox 7 as of September 23rd. If you are running a version of Readability earlier than 1.8, try updating it.

            • #1302239

I checked Readability 1.9’s install.rdf file, as described above, and it’s been updated to work with FF versions 8.*.

Last time I checked the ReadAbility addon, it had known bugs (margin sizes too big, etc), so I went back to the javascript bookmarklet (I assigned it to a button on the toolbar). It’s still working fine in FF v7.0.1.

There is an addon called Enjoy Reading. It is heavily based on Readability. I have not seen any problems with it, but I do not use it very much.

Best Bet prior to installing or upgrading to a newer version of Firefox:

Make a backup of your profile(s).

I use Mozbackup, a standalone program that will make backups of Firefox, Thunderbird, Seamonkey, and Sunbird profiles. It has an editable .ini file in the same folder as the program itself. You can modify the file naming mask to also include the name of the profile–valuable if you have multiple profiles–and specifying where to save the backups–I save them to a subfolder in my dropbox folder. Also, you can choose what and what not to back up including addons contained in within your profile–addons not in your profile and plugins are backed up by Mozbackup.

Then, with a backup available, if there is a problem during the upgrade, you have a backup from which to restore a possibly hosed profile.

There is also the FEBE addon which, if installed in your profile, can, I believe, make a complete backup of your profile, but, also, I believe, can only be used from within a running Firefox. Also, I am not sure if it can be used with the other Mozilla programs.

      Second Best Bet:

Install the Addon Compatibility Reporter (ACR) addon. It will disable addon compatibility checking and thus allow you to have use of all your addons before they are formally updated to be compatible with the newer version of Firefox. Having used the most advanced, cutting edge version of Firefox currently known as Nightly, but previously known as Minefield or Trunk for many years now, I do not recall a truly functionally incompatible addon causing me data loss. The worst case typically meant having to (re)start the browser in safe mode and disabling any suspected incompatible addons before restarting the browser, again.

Another nice feature of ACR is within the Addon Mgr. (about:addons), users can report whether an addon they have is or is not compatible with the version of the browser they are running. This reporting will help both the folks at addons.mozilla.org and addon developers know if an addon remains compatible or not.

I just saw a new addon called, I believe, Disable Addon Compatibility Checking or something like. It appears to only disable compatibility checking meaning it is ACR without the reporting function.

      Hope this helps.

Some of the problems I was having with the WSL using FF6 have gone away since upgrading to FF7, i.e. the Manage Attachments popup “Close Window” button not working…now works fine with all the same add-ons loaded. Ain’t progress wonderful. 😆

If you still have the older version of Firefox installed, I would recommend that you make a new profile, copy just the key files from your old profile to the new one and then install the new version of Firefox and only after that is up and running, begin installing your addons.

Creating a new Firefox profile on Windows
Transferring data to a new profile

      • #1307674

I finally followed you suggestion and created new Firefox profile and I was able to install the latest version of FF. I didn’t copy anything over just started clean. I think both profiles are still out there but I believe it is using the new one and doesn’t ask which one to use.

Should I leave the old one there or should it be deleted and rename the new one to the standard name ?

    • #1307682

The name of the profile doesn’t matter. It’s composed of random characters for your security.

If you start Firefox up to the profile manager, you can switch between them. Otherwise, Firefox will just keep starting up in the last one it used.

If you want to remove your old profile for privacy or disk space reasons, I suggest you first copy out your bookmarkbackups folder “just in case.” Then you can use the profile manager to delete it.

      After closing Firefox:

Windows start menu > Run (or Search) > firefox.exe /ProfileManager

(Note: the space between firefox.exe and /ProfileManager is intentional)

If you switch profiles often, you can set up a second shortcut with this target (or equivalent, if you are on a 32-bit system):

      Code:
      “C:Program Files (x86)Mozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe” /ProfileManager
