I decided to upgrade my Windows 10 install from version 1607 to version 1703. Since I haven’t booted into this Windows 10 install since I installed the Anniversary Update back in April, it is running OS Build 14393.0, so I thought the easiest way to get this install upgraded was to download KB4025342 from the Windows Update Catalog and install it.

However, when I try to install this update, the Windows Update Standalone Installer tells me that the update is not applicable to my computer.

Are there any prerequisite updates that have to be installed before 1607 can be upgraded to 1703?

Did you make sure you downloaded the correct bittedness file (i.e. x64 for a 64-bit machine)?

If you decide to follow Windows Update path, then use Windows Update which will install the missing pre-requisite updates. There are likely some since you say that you haven’t updated 1607 at all.
The other option is to download the installation ISO, boot into 1607 and run the update from within 1607. Do not disconnect from the Internet as you may run into exactly the same issue as you do now with the manual download.

@Kristy That was almost the problem, but I noticed it before downloading the file. The file I have is 784 MB in size, which matches the x64 version on the Update Catalog, and 64bit is the version I need.

I ran WUShowHide and the update wasn’t listed, which is why I opted to do download it from the Update Catalog site to begin with. But since that didn’t work, I think your second suggestion is the route I’ll take – downloading the latest ISO using the Media Creation Tool and do a complete format and reinstall of Windows 10. Hopefully the Windows activation carries over when you do that and 1703 hasn’t yet been installed on the machine?

I did this in a virtual machine from the Windows 8.1 install I use daily and it installed Windows 10 version 1703 OS Build 15063.0. That is not quite 15063.483, but it did allow me to install KB4025342 at that point, bringing Windows to that build number.

Now to replicate these steps on my actual Windows 10 install and see if it is as painless there as it was in the virtual machine…

I haven’t suggested to do a complete format.
If you read carefully, I said:
“boot into 1607 and run the update from within 1607”
This is an in place update.
And stop using wushowhide for other purpose than for what it was designed, i.e only TEMPORARILY stop updates. This means few hours only for testing and finding better solutions to what Windows Update proposes at a certain time.

Oh, I see what you mean now with the in place update. I may give that a shot first. But in my case it’s a clean Windows install with no applications or user data tied to it, so it’s not like I’d loose anything with doing a format.

Also, just to clarify the wushowhide usage, I just used it last night to see if the 1703 update was listed as one of the available updates. I haven’t been using it to prevent updates from happening. The reason it doesn’t have any updates installed on it is because yesterday was the first time I booted into that Windows 10 install since I updated it from 1511 to 1607 on it in April.

Give a go to Windows Update Minitool. It is far better suited for the purpose than wushowhide. You will never look back afterwards.

Try using the Update Assistant at Download Windows 10. Click the Update Now button.

Be sure to backup your system before beginning the installation.

Do you know you’ll need KB4013214 (Creators Update Privacy settings) before you can upgrade to 1703?
It says: “This update is required before Windows Update will download and install the Windows 10 Creator Update.”
