    Hi
Susan Bradley advised that the March Update KB3139398 may cause USB problem and hold.
I normally read the newsletter and take any advice offered but on this occasion all the updates slipped through and updated before I was aware. One of my devices, a Kingston DataTraveler Locker+G2, is now only loading sporadically and I wonder if this patch is causing the problem. Other hardware (scanner) okay.
Would it be safe to un-install this patch to see if this resolves the problem?
    Thanks for any help.
    ps Running Windows7 on laptop.

I think you’re always safe to temporarily uninstall a patch, to see if doing so clears up a problem. Sometimes that’s the only way you can know for sure.

If you find that uninstalling it clears up the problem, please let us know.

In this case, Susan advised to hold off on that patch, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

Hi again, tried the password secure flash in another USB port but it did not recognise device. I then uninstalled the patch KB3139398 and the flash now works fine. Looks like patch was the culprit.Expect Microsoft to fix this or is that Kingstons problem? Thanks for your help.

I have that KB installed and it hasn’t caused any problems for a Cruzer Edge Flash drive.

Why did Susan advise to hold off on installing it ?

    • #1557496

Ms. Bradley almost always recommends holding off on driver updates. KB3139398 is a security update to the Windows USB drivers. The reason she says to hold off is just to see if problems crop up with the update. The problem she has identified is that for certain configurations the update would not install. She recommends installing the update.

It appears the OP found an issue which appears to be unique to his setup.

Is the Cruzer Edge flash drive encrypted?
My Kingston is an encrypted flash drive, perhaps this is why I was having a problem with the patch. Uninstalling patch definitely solved my problem and I shall wait and see what Susan’s comments are in her next column.

I recommend you contact Microsoft support. Support for security fixes is free. They need to know if there is a problem with encrypted flash drives.

No, my Cruzer Edge sticks are just as is from the shop.

        Thanks Joe
Here is the reply from Microsoft Answer Desk:-

You can try to install it again and if you are still having issue with your Flash drive you can uninstall it and try to wait for another update for your computer or driver update for the hardware. Or you can contact Kingston or Manufacturer of your computer for the updated driver for the USB port.
Yes, if you are having issue with the update. I suggest that you wait for another update then try to include that on the next Windows Updates

Shall try this after holiday. Cheers

What a bunch of garbage. That is just someone’s attempt to close a case on the first contact. I’d try to get it escalated.
