USB device failure

I have an HP1200 printer, an Epson C88 printer, an Epson v500 scanner and a Dymo label printer connected to USB ports on the tower. I also have a powered hub. As of last night, I cannot access any of the devices plugged into the tower. Those connected to the hub work fine. On the hub, I have a keyboard, a wireless mouse and a card reader.

I’ve tried uninstalling and re-installing the HP1200. Windows finds the printer, finds the driver, then fails the install.

I’ve downloaded and run USBDview. It will not uninstall any of the old usb devices that it lists – memory sticks, for example.

I can use all the help that this group can offer. I can do a complete re-install, but would love not to. I do have a complete backup from Acronis True Image. However, I did the backup before realizing that I could not access these devices, so it is likely corrupt, too.

I would first try unplugging the Hub and trying one of the printers on the PORT the hub is plugged into. This should tell you if you have bad ports, I would say it is unlikely that ALL the usb ports failed at the same time unless you have an INTERNAL hub that you are using and that hub failed. Are the ports you are using for the printers directly connected to the Mother Board?

Another option might be to go into the device manager and uninstall all the USB devices, then reboot the computer and let windows find and reinstall them.

Thanks, Mercy. The ports on the tower are all on the mb. There is no internal hub. I did get USBDview to work. I just had to open it “as administrator”. It didn’t help any, but at least I know for future reference.

I think you’re right about the solution being to uninstall everything USB and start again. It beats a clean win 7 install.
