Before I installed W7 64 over Vista 64, I was able to copy large directories (6Gig+) from a hard drive to a usb 2 drive with no problems.

With W7, the copy process sometimes starts and and then hangs when the progress bar gets to about 1/8th of the way. I also get a message saying the file is no longer found. After I stop the copy process, explorer shows the drive and the directory on the usb drive but if I try to open the directory, I get file not found. If I unplug the usb drive and restart Explorer, it still shows the drive and the directories on the drive as if the drive were still connected.

The only way to get Explorer to work correctly is to reboot and restart Explorer. If I reconnect the usb drive and try the copy again, sometimes it works and sometimes it repeats the above. I have also had applications write files to the hard drive and when I try to open them again, I get file not found. A reboot is required to fix this problem too.

Device Manager indicates no problems with usb devices or controllers.

Any else seeing this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix the problem?

    Thanks,

    Steve

That sounds very similar to a problem I had with an HP c6700b desktop. I described it as if the system suddenly just lost contact with drives other than the main system drive. In my case Vista showed some signs of being flaky in the I-O protocols but putting 7 on it tore a hole in the fabric of space. Couldn’t ever find any direct reference to the problem anywhere except for a white paper on some HP mobile systems that had very similar I-O controllers with a known problem with I-O that could result in loss of data and function.

My solution was to put XP on that system and its been happy days ever since. So I suspect that it is a glitch in the drivers Win 7 is using so you might check with the mfg. of the mobo and see if they updated any of the chipset drivers to work specifically with Win 7 64-bit or you could even try the Vista 64-bit drivers and see if they work better.

I had similar issues upgrading to Win7. Finally, after using two usb external drives running vista 64 I just left them on and plugged in and booted into Win7 and behold Win7 recognized new hardware and installed drivers. They work great now.

      Andy and Rydson,

      thanks for your continued help.

I stumbled across the HP update sp44620 yesterday and installed it on my Pavilion e9140f. After the install and reboot I got one 6Gig directory to copy to the usb device okay, but I could do that sometimes before, so I’m not sure if the problem is fixed or not.

I have requested the MS hotfix and as soon as it arrives, I will install it and continue to test.

      Thanks,

      Steve

      Hi Folks,

Sorry for the long delay in getting back with the results.

HP update sp44620 fixed the problem. I can now copy large directories to USB devices without any problems.

      Thanks for all the help!

      Best,

      Steve e
