    this is a challenging one:
I used Norton Ghost 11 to copy my hard disk to another disk.
the original machine was HP with Windows XP,SP3.

now when i used this disk on another machine (PCS) and booted from it
i had to re-activate my windows, which i did and everything was working perfectly fine!!
    but one..
i noticed that USB ports are not working, further i saw that the drivers for the USB controllers were not installed!!
now i had another similar PCS machine,i backed up the USB controller drivers from there
and tried to install but no success.i even downloaded them from intel site but still no success in installing them.

on installing it gives the following message:

“there was a problem installing the hardware-USB Controller.
the driver installation file for this device is missing a neccessary entry.this may be beacause the INF was
written for windows 95 or later.contact your hardware vendor”

the device type is USB Controller.
    Manufacturer: INTEL
    Location:PCI Bus 0,device 29,function 0.
    Location:PCI Bus 0,device 29,function 1.
    Location:PCI Bus 0,device 29,function 2.
    Location:PCI Bus 0,device 29,function 7.

thanks for any help or suggestion to combat this.

Did you install the chipset drivers for the new system board? If not, I’d start there first. Make sure that you install all of the drivers associated with your new machine. You should be able to get everything you need from the manufacturer’s web site.

I found out that it was intel 845GV chipset, went to intel site and downloaded the best i could find, installed it but no success.
i have installed scores of win 2000,XP,Server 2000 operating systems etc after formatting a PC but never ever i had the problem of USB controller drivers!!
they always there when i checked after a fresh windows installation.

is there a free software that can find the corrupted driver and download its latest version?
this problem is really a tough one!! any one..

Are you absolutely certain you don’t have the driver? I thought I was having a similar problem, when the computer would not recognize my external hard drive (either to connect or safely disconnect). After a lot of monkeying around I found a program from NirSoft that lists USB devices. I found the one that wasn’t working, uninstalled it, and restarted the computer. When I plugged in the external hard drive–lo and behold–there it was. Just like new!
