The link below is to download instructions on how to use the utilities that come with Windows 10 Home to setup an Automatic Backup system that is almost (move 1 folder every 1-3 months) maintenance free.  The backup system includes personal data backups with single or multiple file restore as well as full drive images and drive image restore.  I wrote these instructions with details and screen shots so a first timer can easily set this system up and use it.   It has served me well for a long time and a user doesn’t have to install and learn a new application to accomplish and get the safety from regular backups.

This is all very well and good except for the fact that, when the Download button is pressed, a new, full-screen window is opened with a commercial for some software.
Very bad behaviour in my mind!

The pop up ad is part of a free download host service.  Just hit the close button.  It doesn’t interfere with the download.

      What pop-up ?

Chrome Version 97.0.4692.71 (Official Build) beta (64-bit), uBlock Origin, uBlock Origin Extra.

Anyway, you can’t backup your OS C drive as the backup procedure won’t backup files in use…

This is not a replacement to proper image backup.

This is not a replacement to proper image backup.

The image created by this does restore the drive like it was with all files there.  I have done this several times and helped countless others restore the image made by Windows.  The only thing missing after an image restore is what was added since the image was made.  As far as I can tell this sure acts like a proper image, and if not; what does a proper image have that this Windows image doesn’t.

Nearly all image backup software makes the backup image while Windows is running which is files in use.  Microsoft uses two services to do this called Volume Shadow Copy and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider.  Most third party backup software use these same services to make their “proper” images.
