User Permissions Problem?

Hope someone can help,

I’ve got a peer-to-peer lan running windows 2000 on both machines. I’ve set up a folder that is shared over the network. The folder security permissions are setup to allow full control to “Everyone”. Yet each user can only open documents for which that user is the owner. The documents in question are Word documents, both word 2000 and word 2002.

I do have each user setup with a username and password on each computer, so that shouldn’t be the problem. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Can each user actually see the other user’s documents?
If so, what is the ‘error’ reported when they try to open them?

Yes, each user can see the other user’s documents.
In Word 2002, the error is “Word cannot open the document: user does not have access priveleges
(Hostpathdocname.doc)”
In Word 2000, the error is “The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
* check the file permissions for the document or drive.
* use the file open dialog box to locate the document.
(hostpathdocname.doc)”

Naturally, I tried to use the file open dialog and received the same error. I have also tried to open the document with notepad, but was also told “access is denied”. So it seems to point to some problem with the permissions setting?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, this one really has me stumped.

Thanks for the references, I’ve checked through them and I don’t think they apply.

Q224016: A) The file does exist and is in the path requested. It is not an HTML file. C) The file name does not contain any foreign language characters. D) It is not a mail merge document. E) I am not attempting to insert a named range from an Excel Document. F) The document is not part of an HTML frames document.

Q229426: The document is not an HTML document.

Q272230: I am not using a domain based LAN. The LAN is peer-to-peer using a workgroup.

Q286892: This one seemed to have the closest application. However, I don’t think the encryption level is the problem, and this is what I have done to satisfy myself that it is not the problem.
I logged in locally on one computer as each user and used a local copy of Word 2000 also Word 2002 (on the other computer), and still encountered the problem. So the only way I could see this to be the problem, would be if the same computer could have different encryption packages for two different users logged onto the same system. If this is the case, how can I tell what encryption package is installed for each user? (But I don’t think this is the case).

So, I respectfully state that I don’t think the KB Articles apply. But again, thank you for the references, at least it is something to check out.

This is one of the hassles of running a peer to peer network. Managing users and permissions.
You could
1) Try adding the group “Network”. I have my doubts – but that might do it.
2) Create an account for each user with the exact same logon and password that they use when logging on to their local computer.

Thanks for your thoughts. Each user already has the exact same logon and password on each system. I haven’t tried the group “Network”, but I did try putting everyone in the group “VONWAADEN” and then giving the VONWAADEN group permissions on the folder and files.

All this got me to playing some more and looking up more info in the Microsoft KB. I found article Q290649 Security Policy May become corrupted. I wonder if this is the case for my problem?

How would I check to see if the security group policy template has become corupted (or empty)? I must admit to not knowing anything about security group policy templates.

I admit – I come to this more familar with an NT4 network than 2000.
I think it less likely that your security policy is corrupted than your network shares are not configured correctly. One way of checking this would be to set up another network share and compare results.

Have you mapped the shares on each computer? – if not it may be worth a try.
Otherwise, it could be worth a search or a post at the Win2000Mag Forum.
Sorry we haven’t come up with a solution – I’ll keep on thinking – but would appreciate the answer if you do find it.

At last Ihave figured out the problem!

Thanks to Microsoft and KB article Q250494 “Access is Denied” Error Message Appears When Permissions Are Correct.
Apparently when using an NTFS file system, if you encrypt a folder (and subfolders), then only the owner of the file can decrypt and thus open the file. This is by design. I guess it makes sense, although it would be nice to be able to encrypt and allow anyone in the group to decrypt (but that’s more of a rant). So I unchecked the encrypt box at the top level folder, had the system decrypt all of the files and folders in that path, and viola, all the users (per the permission settings) were able to access the file.
