After reading the recent recommendations of PKCano and others in the discussions of Group A and B updating, I have some questions about using Disk Cleanup to clean up Windows Update files. I have never done this on my Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium system, so those files take up around 13 GB!
Although I’m eager to get rid of the junk, I’m also a little hesitant to delete the files since if I understand correctly they are there to allow the user to uninstall updates. So does this mean I won’t be able to uninstall previously installed Windows Updates after running this? There doesn’t seem to be a way to choose which files to delete, such as limiting it to older updates. I am in Group A and have just successfully installed the October updates.
So far I haven’t found any problems with them, but I’m concerned that I might encounter a problem in the next week or so and then not be able to uninstall an update causing the problem. Are there other ways to uninstall updates if I delete these Windows Update files in Disk Cleanup? Also, are there any other ramifications of deleting these files that I need to be aware of? I’ll still be able to view update history afterward, right? Will it affect my list of Installed Updates? Thanks for any guidance you can give me.
