I recently purchaced a new computer with Windows XP. I have set up two user accounts in windows. How do I link my e-mail account to one or the other windows accounts? The only consistency I have found is that the e-mail seems to be attached to the first windows account that I log on to in a given day. Once this happens the the e-mail is does not show up after logging on to the other windows account.
What controls how and where an e-mail account is attached to a windows user account?

AskWoody MVPMarch 13, 2003 at 3:16 pm #660938I would suspect that whatever user was logged in when you created the e-mail account ‘owns’ it. The reason is does not show up when the other account is logged on is in the XP environment settings, e-mail, etc. are segregated by user. You could set up to ‘share’ a .pst file between different accounts by changing the location of the .pst file to a folder that both account can access. If you do this you should never have both accounts logged in and using e-mail at the same time. That would really screw up the .pst file.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 14, 2003 at 10:19 am #661152Pardon me for asking, Roger, but you never did say WHAT software you’re using for email. The gang here seems to be assuming Outlook. Is that true? If you were using some other email client, one of us could tell you how to setup multiple email accounts with that software and where to put the files (Moz, Netscape, Pegasus, Eudora, etc.)

AskWoody LoungerMarch 15, 2003 at 9:35 am #661326Excellent question Al, as I was reading this thread I wondered the same thing. In XP I have set up 2 email accounts for 2 users (on the laptop at work), and have them using 2 different email programs which keeps each private and password protected. I thought that was the logical way to go, but I am relatively new to XP Professional and still have heaps to learn.

AskWoody MVPMarch 15, 2003 at 8:43 pm #661386Cyberdance, With XP you don’t have to have different e-mail programs unless it is a personal preference. You can secure a users set of files so that only the use and an administrator could access them. It is a matter of how much work you want to do and how many restrictions the users will put up with.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 16, 2003 at 1:43 am #661445Hi Joe, yes I know 1 program can be used for multiple users, but in my simple little brain I find it less complex to use 2 programs. My next door neighbour just purchased a brand new computer (color me green with envy), it is a P4, 3.02 GHz, 80 gig hard drive, 512 mgs ram, cd-rw, DVD, complete with super video and audio devices. Isn’t there anyone out there who would like to donate one to me, I would give it a very good home!
– there is actually a point to my rambling, it came with XP Pro, and MS Works 2003, so on topic for this discussion about MS 97 on an XP machine. I have thought about the question of loading her 97 Professional office suite, but feel it better to advise her to pay for the upgrade to 2000 as it is not that expensive anymore, I was asked for help in setting it all up, she and her husband both want to have access, so back to the topic of 2 email prog’s.
If there is anyone out there who may know something about subwoofers x 4 speakers, Id be happy to hear back, its a new Dell 8250, the only thing I could not get working were the 4 speakers, have 2 functioning okay, but can’t find the problem with the other 2. Being brand new I doubt there is anything wrong with them, more likely I stuffed up the connections someplace. I will contact Dell if I cannot figure it out, everything is under warranty of course. But since I am here, might as well ask. Thanks for the tips about XP Pro, when I log into this amazing forum I always learn something new, you folks are the best.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 16, 2003 at 11:26 am #661499I can’t really say I know something about the newer speaker systems, but ….. the only time I’ve ever had to think twice about connecting speakers was if they require “digital” signal. I haven’t had to do that yet with XP so I don’t know where the checkoff box is. Otherwise, check your cabling once more to make sure you have them connected properly. Maybe there’s an additional wire especially for digital that has to be used. Also on that note, be sure you have them connected to the correct output jack on the sound card. I don’t think any of there things will be true, since you said you DO have sound out of two of them. Maybe the woofer (Big Dog
} has an on-off or volume control or something. I bet when you find the answer it’ll be some little tidbit….. There is a setting in here (attachment) for Quad speakers – do you suppose…?

AskWoody LoungerMarch 16, 2003 at 11:41 am #661501Hi Al, I checked and rechecked the cabling, and think it is right.? The 4 speakers connect to the subwoofer directly into 4 sockets, then a cable goes from the subwoofer into the back of the tower, this cable has only 2 sockets. But no matter how much I looked at it all, I failed to see what I missed. (Not digital).
But the photo you inserted is very cool Al, I did of course go into the control panel and check the audio, I even went into accessories and checked the audio components, I did a search on the machine for Quad sound, but nothing, nada, nix!! HOWEVER, I do not recall seeing this screen, so I will have a look tomorrow when I see my neighbour again. You may just have found the problem Al. Either way, I am learning more and more about XP Pro, for which I am grateful. Thank you so much for taking the time to insert a screen shot, sure makes it easier for me to follow.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 17, 2003 at 7:04 am #661597Hi, Cyber ~
I had & solved a similar issue with a new Dell Opti-Plex GX-150. I think your speaker setup is not a ‘quadraphonic’ setup, but rather a ‘4.1’ setup. If the cables/hardware are okay, then you may wish to check these:
- Click on the ‘Advanced‘ button as Al indicated > ‘Speakers‘ tab > Drop-down box of ‘Speaker setup:‘
- There should be ‘4.1 surround sound speakers‘ > Select it > ‘Apply‘ > ‘OK‘
Now the 2nd step:
- Looking at Al’s screenshot, click the other ‘Advanced‘ button above in ‘Device volume‘ section
- This will bring the ‘Master Volume‘ window > on menu click ‘Options‘ > ‘Properties‘
- Make sure there is a check by ‘Master Volume‘, ‘Wave‘, ‘SW Synth‘, ‘CD Audio‘, & ‘PC Speaker‘ > ‘OK‘
- (enable anything else you may need while you are in there)
- Make sure everything in your ‘Master Volume‘ window has ‘Mute‘ unchecked
- Go to ‘Options‘ again > Put a check next to ‘Advanced Controls‘ – this will give availability of the ‘Advanced‘ button underneath ‘Mute all‘ in the first ‘Master Volume‘ control column
- Click that ‘Advanced‘ button > put a check in the box next to ‘Enable Digital Output‘ > ‘Close‘ > Close ‘Master Volume‘ > and finally, in ‘Sounds and Audio Device Properties‘ > (if not greyed out) ‘Apply‘ > ‘OK‘
I hope this helps you

AskWoody LoungerMarch 17, 2003 at 10:54 am #661611Hi Bruce, today i did take in Al’s note and checked, it does say the Quad sound is active. I will print out your post and have a look again tomorrow, its a relatively minor thing, the owner is delighted with it having the 2 speakers active, its me who is persisting.
The sound is awesome on that machine. Thank you for all the time you put into creating the post and screen shot, I promise to let you know how I go with it. I think I went wrong here:-
“Make sure everything in your ‘Master Volume’ window has ‘Mute’ unchecked” I am pretty sure I checked them on, not off while trying to work out why all speakers were not working. -

AskWoody MVPMarch 16, 2003 at 7:44 pm #661529Cyberdance,
Have you considered the Student & Teach version of Office XP? Seldom is any proof of either required. It is pretty cheap – $129 US. Don’t know the availability outside the US. The only draw back is that I thought I read that when Office 2k3 is released you can’t pay an upgrade price to get it. But don’t take that as cast in concrete.Joe
