I have an Excel spreadsheet that gets data from an Access database. One sheet gets data from a table, the other sheet gets data from an Access query. This spreadsheet works fine when using Windows 98, however, when I try to open the spreadsheet on a computer running Windows NT 4.0, SP6a I get a MSQuery error and Excel is closed.

    I am using Office 97

The odds are the other machine does not have MSQuery installed. MsQuery is an option and is not installed by default. Run office setup again on the NT machine and make sure MSQuery is checked in the install list.

A nice suggestion, however, MS Query is installed — I double checked

Well, I apologize, I am just using a shotgun approach here but it might have to do with file permissions. Maybe the user on the second machine does not have permission to access the database files.

I appreciate you trying to help. Let me give you more details.

            1. Same username and password at both computers
            2. Can pull in data from an Access table. The problem occurs when trying to get data from an Access query

Have you done and “Edit Query” in Excel and looked at the SQL statement to make sure the query name and field names have not changed since the query was built in Excel. Excel will not update itself for changes made to a query in Access.

The query was built in Access not excel

Yes, but any time you use the Data/Get External Data feature to get data from Access Excel/MSquery builds its own query which in turns refers to the query in Access. You can view Excel’s query by using the Edit Query option in excel and then chosing the SQL view.
One scenario that would cause your problem would be this.
You create “Query1” in Access. Then you goto to computer1 and set up an Excel Query that refers to the Access “Query1” and pulls that information into Excel. It works fine. Then some modifies “Query1” in Access, maybe changing a field name or lets say the query name to “Query2”. You then goto Computer2 and set up an Excel Query to get the Data from the Access query now called “Query2”. It works fine. But if you now went back to Computer1 and try to “refresh” the query in Excel that was built before the change, it won’t work anymore. Because the Excel Query now trys to get to an Access query that no longer exists. Don’t know if that is what is happening in your case, but it is a possibility.
