AskWoody PlusMarch 1, 2021 at 9:40 am #2347088I’ve got OneDrive set up on my Samsung tablet and phone — pushed there by Samsung warning that the Samsung cloud is going away. The only thing I used the cloud for is backing-up and syncing between the tablet and phone . So: I set up OneDrive but the tablet isn’t using it. Is there some trick to tell it “OK, I’ve got OneDrive, now please start using it”?

AskWoody PlusMarch 1, 2021 at 11:13 am #2347136You don’t see any files when you sign in to the app with your Microsoft Account?
Nope — I created the OneDrive account specifically because it was explicitly named by Samsung. so I hadn’t used OneDrive previous cloud]. My tablet and phone still think they’re backing up to the samsung cloud and I can’t quite figure out how to switch them over.

AskWoody_MVPMarch 1, 2021 at 1:32 pm #2347199Do you have any folders or files already stored in OneDrive, or just the ones that Samsung Cloud is supposed to be moving over? I have a Samsung phone with Samsung Cloud. I got the same message of Samsung Cloud going away and prompting me to jump to OneDrive. I went through the whole process. Under my OneDrive Photos folder, it created a subfolder called Samsung Gallery with all the photos and videos backed up from my phone. Do you see anything like that?

AskWoody PlusMarch 1, 2021 at 1:22 pm #2347196Really? Why would anyone use Microsoft drive anyway, anywhere… I’m sure that it is a “good” app, I’m sure it works, but more Microsoft? Throw the baby out with the bathwater.
I don’t understand. The Backup/Sync stuff is built in and uses a cloud storage system to effect it. What came with the tablet/phone is to use the Samsung cloud. I thought that was great, because the only alternative at the time was to use the google cloud and have a low-level, gut [but, really, unsupported] distrust of google.
So samsung tells me they’re shutting down their cloud and explictly says “get a OneDrive” account. I don’t like MS much but I guess I dislike them less than google and since it seemed that Samsung was “greasing the path” to switching to OneDrive, I made OneDrive account.
In order to backup/sync *SOME* cloud service has to bridge the devices. What’s the alternative???
And I didn’t need to install the OneDrive app on either device. The only thing I had to do was “connect” to the OneDrive cloud. and I assume/expect/hope that one of these days something will pop up to ask me to “switch” to the now-available OD cloud. Basically there’s no MS-ness on my devices [any more than there is Linux-ness on my PC from the NAS I have mounted over our LAN that is running on Linux]

Under my OneDrive Photos folder, it created a subfolder called Samsung Gallery with all the photos and videos backed up from my phone. Do you see anything like that?
Nope — I just checked and my new OneDrive account has three things: an empty directory “Documents”, and empty directory “Pictures” and a “Getting started with OneDrive” PDF.
I happened to open the Samsung Drive and it says “no files” so I dunno where my backup stuff is going!! I see that it tells me “Make the move to MS OneDrive” and i see what’s going on, at last. “You’ll get 15gb free for a year” No mention how much it’ll cost after that. You’re using it — do you know what the charges will be?
And that’s where it tells me what I’ve been seeking “After the move, Gallery will be continuously backed up to OneDrive.” I think/hope I can turn that off. I store nothing in the Samsung cloud and expect to continue to store nothing in the ONeDrive cloud . And then “Everything else you’re currently backing up to the Samsung Could will continue to be backed up there with no Storage Charge”. Since it says backups will be free, I wonder what the charge will be if I don’t store _anything_ [except my backups] on OneDrive.
Thanks for the info about OneDrive. Now to explore what it’ll cost [and how to turn off the Gallery stuff].

AskWoody_MVPMarch 3, 2021 at 7:38 am #2347741Your description of what you see when you check your OneDrive account does indicate a brand new OneDrive setup that hasn’t been used before. So that sounds right. I’m not sure why the Samsung cloud isn’t creating the Samsung Gallery folder under your Photos folder. That’s how it’s supposed to work as far as I can tell. I think you’re going to have to contact Samsung for help with that one if you decide you want to use it or just turn it off.
As far as a OneDrive subscription, you get 5G of storage for free permanently. The 15GB for free sounds like one of the special promotions offered in the past. I’m not sure if you’ll be able to keep the 15GB after a year, or if it’ll be cut to 5Gb. But you will have at least the 5GB at no charge moving forward.

AskWoody_MVPMarch 1, 2021 at 1:51 pm #2347205I was able to switch to Microsoft OneDrive from Samsung Gallery as below:
To connect your Samsung Gallery to OneDrive
Open the Samsung Gallery app settings.
Tap Switch to OneDrive and follow the prompts to move your Samsung Cloud Gallery to Microsoft OneDrive.
Notes:
Samsung Gallery connection to OneDrive is available for certain models and markets only.
Your Samsung Gallery can only be connected to OneDrive personal accounts (i.e. not OneDrive for work or school users).
If Samsung Gallery upload to OneDrive isn’t working
If you connected your Samsung Gallery app to OneDrive, and see the error message “Something went wrong”, close the app, start the connection again ensuring that all permissions are granted.
Notes:
Your Samsung Gallery can only be connected to OneDrive personal accounts (i.e. not OneDrive for work or school users).
If the Samsung Gallery still doesn’t sync to your OneDrive, please contact Samsung Customer Support via your device. Go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud > More > Contact us > Error reports ensuring that Send system log data is enabled.
