Does anyone have any pointers on the practical uses for Notes in Outlook 2k? They are supposed to be an electronic version of Post-It ™ notes, but at least the paper version has one big advantage: it can be placed where it is needed. I decided to try making a note for a simple reminder – not a task per se, nor even important enough to stick into the calendar – but the only place I could get it to “stick” was in the Notes folder.

I usually use the Outlook Today view to see a quick overview of all major items, so I added the Notes folder to the list of folders to display in the “Messages” section, hoping that it would at least show a count of notes that I have left for myself. Since notes do not have a read/unread flag, and Outlook Today only shows the count of unread items, it displays a big uninformative beside the Notes folder.

There is a lot of empty space on the Outlook Today screen. I’d like to be able to stick a Note somewhere on this screen, to have it readily noticeable on my primary view. My memory is bad enough, that’s why I wanted to write a Note. If I can’t readily see that there is a Note out there to be read, how am I going to remember that it is there??? nuts

notes are useless. they only work in the notes folder. well, that’s not exactly true, but if they are used on the desktop, they’ll keep outlook open and hidden when you close it.

if you want a good sticky note program, see 3M for their electronic version of post it’s. They won’t do what you want exactly either, but it’s the closest you’ll come. I use them for desktop notes and outlook notes for storing passwords and user names.

I wasn’t aware that they could be stuck to the desktop. For me, that is good enough. I keep Outlook in my Startup folder so that while I am at work it is always open. Therefore the “closed but still open” problem isn’t really a problem for me. The desktop is where I temporarily store a lot of “work in process” files, as well as the usual system clutter, so it is actually quite a convenient place to stick these notes.

Now that I’m aware of this option, is there a way to add Outlook Notes to the “New” menu when right-clicking the desktop?

you can add a shortcut to the desktop to open a note.
the command line is this, using the proper path for your computer
          “c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10OUTLOOK.EXE” /select outlook:/c ipm.stickynote

If you use Notes a lot, this post from early February may be of interest – I certainly found it useful.

I’ve just been experimenting with this same technique originally described at this beginning of this thread. However, instead of using Notes, I’ve been dragging and dropping to Journal. It works just as well, except the text that I’ve dropped is then formattable to a greater extent than the text in Notes, plus I can assign a Subject as an extra organizational tool. Very impressive!

Speaking of Notes annoyances, I just found the keyboard/keystroke command which will minimize any active Outlook window, including Notes: Alt-F6. Been looking for days. (Was right clicking the Title Bar and clicking minimize. Also, Alt-Spacebar works the same as right-click Title Bar.)
