Using Print Screen to copy to Clipboard (All)

I learned from one of Woodie’s books that when you press the Print Screen button the entire screen is copied to the clipboard. Have used this trick several times and it can come in handy. My question is, how can I make the image sharper in the pasted form? It always seems a little fuzzy when I post.

I would guess it is based on your screen resolution – you will need to increase that to get better definition.

(Don’t forget Alt_PrintScreen just grabs the active window.)

Also, use *.bmp or *.tif (or another lossless bitmap format), not *.jpg (which uses a lossy compression that doesn’t work well with screen images).

Two suggestions:

• Make the window smaller and use ALT-Prnt Scrn – this copies just the currently active window, not the whole screen, as Leif suggested
• When pasting (into, I presume, a Word doc or something similar), make the document area as large as possible *before* hitting paste; eg reduce the margins to, say, 1cm all round, make the page landscape instead of portrait if the window is wider than it is tall, etc – this is because it will be pasted in as large as it can go until it is the same size as the original window – and if the original window is the full screen, that’s big!

I use PrintKey 2000 that can be found here.
You can print whole or part of the screen, and what’s very useful, you can save the screen or a selection of it in different formats like gif, .bmp, .jpeg, .jpg, .emf and .wmf.

Apparently PrintKey 2000 is no longer available … a shareware (NOT FREE like the earlier version) is all that’s available — note that the link in your post works okay … but the link in the page to download the program doesn’t.

Go to http://www.karenware.com/powertools.html and download “Directory Printer”, Print the names, and other information, of all folders and files on your computer

Thanks for the suggestions, Dave, Francois and aebingham – unfortunately we’re not allowed to download anything off the net at work, and they’ve actually locked the browsers in such a way as to prevent it in some cases!

Contact your IS support, have them down load the software and test it out. They may even like it and allow the users to use it.

This is one way of getting on the good side of IS.

When I worked I had the same problem. I would download it at home and then either transfer it to work via a remote connection or copy it on whatever media I needed to hand carry it to my work machine.

Possibility, of course – as long as I didn’t get sacked when they found it next time they did some work on my machine!

Apropos of that (but off at a bit of a tangent) – the aforesaid method of locking the browser has meant that a lot of us can’t get shockwave to download, and even though it’s now very necessary (a lot of websites now come up with just a blank screen if you haven’t got it) our IT people haven’t worked out a way to get it past their own locks!

I thought of downloading it at home and bringing it in, but the shockwave site doesn’t actually download a file to your PC that you could then copy and bring in (as far as I can see) – any ideas on how to do that? I would really appreciate that one!
