utility w/xcopy functions (2K SR-1)

I’m looking for a utility with xcopy functionality (ie: copy tree structure along with files, copy newer files only, etc). Running xcopy is very cumbersome when dealing with long directory names. I still miss old XTree.

Any suggestions?

Question: When you say it’s cumbersome, it is cumbersome to type out the long names or to create the DOS names (e.g., c:Program FilesWhiz Bang = c:progra~1whizba~1)?

In another thread there is reference to “Robocopy,” which might or might not be worth exploring. (See post 310117 – I haven’t downloaded it myself.)

The two main utilities I am aware of that will do what you want are:
XXCOPY, which is free for personal use, and holds the record for the number of available switches!
ROBOCOPY, use the version from the “Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools” by downloading and installing the ~12MB RKTOOKS.EXE – works on NT4, W2K, WXP…

For both programs you need to spend some time in reading the documentation, because they are so powerful and customisable…

We use ROBOCOPY for precisely the reasons you want it — to keep a set of directories on a dozen or so target servers as a “mirror” of the corresponding directories on a source server, by copying only the change files since the last run (that is, new files and modified files are copied to the target, and files which have been deleted from the source are also deleted from the target).

One of the reasons I like this utility apart from the fact that it is free is that it is possible to save shortcuts to replicating jobs. So with one mouseclick I can mirror all my data folder. I found it easier to use than trying to create a batchfile to do the ame thing.

I just downloaded both Robocopy and XXCopy to try, as I also wish to have a quick and easy way to backup my files to my second hard disk, but (after installing them fine, and in XXCopy’s case, going through their DOS window agree-to-terms bit) in both cases as soon as I clicked on them, a DOS window flashed up and then just vanished without trace, so fast all I could see was what it was, there was no chance of seeing what was in it!

Is there a setting in Windows XP that I haven’t noticed somewhere to stop DOS windows running? Or it might be in Norton Systemworks or Zonealarm, I suppose, but I’ve looked everywhere I can think of in all three programs and I can’t find anything!

Someone please help!

It sounds as though they intended you to open the command window first (Start>Run…>cmd) before using them. Or to invoke them from a batch file.
