We have a system which archives printed output from a system using mailmerge in Word 97. Normally the mailmerge produces a print file about 2K in size, whose contents can be inspected with a program which strips out the PCL and just leaves the text. Very occasionally a file is produced about 189K in size, which is entirely in graphics/bitmap format, where it is impossible to inspect the text using this PCL-stripping program. As far as we can see, all conditions are the same and there is no peculiarity about the mailmerege data which would cause the LaserJet 4 printer driver to produce graphics rather than text. It is not a matter of Word being left to run all day and gradually degrading (!), for this graphics print file can be produced right at the start of the day.

Has anyone come across this problem, or could offer any suggestions? Thanks!

A variant on this is my experience posted elsewhere on this Board where the same file produces a smaller PDF at higher resolution.

The unpredictability seems to lie in the Postscript conversion. Just a guess though!

Possibly a rogue font being rasterized?

Sorry, chaps – we’re talking pure TrueType fonts, no PostScript, and the supposed “rogue font” is (always) Courier New. We haven’t yet come across anything which will consistently give us the large print file, nor any way of ALWAYS getting the small print file, sadly.

Why not save the document as plain text rather than printing it? What are your formatting requirements?

There isn’t any actual physical “printing” taking place here – the print document is captured by the archiving system instead of being physically printed. It has to go through the print driver to become a print-able document. The archiving system is able to display text-type documents on a screen, but can’t cope with a graphics-type document, sadly.

You can use BBCodes to format your content.
Your account can't use all available BBCodes, they will be stripped before saving.
